DescriptionLast year, Bryan Hitch offered up for sale all twelve covers from his series with Warren Ellis, The Batman's Grave. I picked up two of the covers (which you can see in my CAF gallery), but missed out on getting the cover to issue #8, which was my second favorite cover of the series (the first one being the cover to issue #9). Bryan sold the cover to #8 just hours before I reached out to him to inquire about it.Luckily, the owner, Jens Schlicht, recently decided to part with the cover and I snapped it up. My thanks to him and Tatiana Dykes, who facilitated the sale. This cover, with the burning, gutted buildings in angled perspective, obviously invokes Christopher Nolan's masterpiece, The Dark Knight. But take a look at the Batman in the foreground, as drawn by Hitch. This Batman resembles the Michael Keaton version, not the Christian Bale one. He even has Keaton's distinctive jawline. I am very happy to add this cover to my Bryan Hitch collection. Social/Sharing |

Man, look at that building! I mean, yeah, that's one stud of a Batman. But the backgrounds on this are amazing!

Thank you, Eric! Bryan Hitch's facility with background elements is nothing short of remarkable. And yes, that is a studly Batman. ;)

Hitch giving maximum effort! Very dramatic cover as it it truns the towers at a cinematic angle! The building lights up with flames just like the Dark Knight movie poster.

Thanks for the comment, Marcus! As you note, Hitch really channeled the spirit of the Dark Knight movie poster for this cover.

One of the best Hitch covers that I've seen. Super strong image. Congrats on the great pickup!

What a a great second chance acquisition! I love the Batman figure, but for me, the background is an equal co-star. This piece is one of the best of your stellar Bryan Hitch collection.

Thank you, my friend! I agree; the background really is a co-star of this piece.

It was not easy to sell this fantastic cover, but glad it ended in such a fantastic collection. I displayed at the wall in my home office (of course under UV protection glass) and could enjoy this piece nearly every day. I still have the #5 cover.

I am sure that it was not easy for you to sell this cover, but I am very grateful that you did sell. I was disappointed when I first reached out to Bryan and found out that this cover had already sold, just hours before my inquiry. So I am very happy to get a second chance to own this cover. I'm also glad you still have the cover to issue 5 and I hope it stays in your collection.

Super heroic shot of the Batman with that worm's eye perspective, and the light source coming frome the top. But gotta have those block shadow blacks, though - this is the "Dark Knight" :) Congrats, A K!

The worm's eye perspective is what drew me to this cover in the first place. Bryan Hitch is a Gene Colan-level master of light and shadow. Thanks for the comment, my friend!
