Description

A really great Dragonlady by gentleman Jim Silke. Jim grew up reading Terry and the Pirates and considers April Kane and the Dragonlady his high school sweethearts. We first discussed this commission at Big Wow a few years ago but we made it a reality this year. I think Jim did a great job with a retake on the character. We worked through a few prelims below that were included in the deal. The art is large, almost 16 x 23 inches. The prelims are all about that size too except the smaller color study and much larger multi-character piece. The multi-character piece was a prelim to include some of the pirates but the cost to finish that piece went over budget by too much so we stuck with a simpler piece. I wasn't quite sure about some of the first prelims as they looked more like a female Indiana Jones or Valkyrie from Airboy. I asked Jim to make her more asian and to be distinctively the Dragonlady. The last prelim with the hat is what we sort of agreed upon. The final piece evolved from there. I like where Jim took it although I think I'd have preferred a few of the changes made left as planned, I am extremely happy with the art and the experience of working with Jim Silke.

Silke may have thrown in a bit of Wally Wood & Madame Toy (transitioning to her usual topless state) into the Caniff Dragonlady mixture and it may not be exactly canon (or Cannon, for that matter), variety is the spice of life. (Also, for whatever it is worth, I too like the prelim with the hat, but as itself, the final product is quite nice as well.)

This has to be one of the more interesting Silke pieces I've seen. You've got the rendered flesh tones. Less rendering on the clothse. And almost no rendering on the cape, don't think I've ever seen flat colors like that from Silke.
