Description

Here is 1987 West Coast Avengers Issue 17 Page 16 by Al Milgrom and Joe Sinott. It is a page from the issue that is the debut of The Desert Dwellers (Sunstroke, Butte, Gila and Cactus), the Sonoran desert lackey team from Arizona created by Dominus. This is also the first page in my collection from a comic (not a guide) I bought straight from the newsstand and still own. Another great addition of mid to low level villains.

Awesome! I remember this arc very well. I loved seeing the WCAs time travel to Marvel's old West. This title was one of the first titles I started on with first issue when I just started out collecting comics. I thought too long on this page. Bravo!

Thanks, Jason!  This and the previous page were the best in the entire comic book in my opinion.

The superhero titles I bought and collected as a kid in the mid-80's were West Coast Avengers, Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men and X-Factor with the non-superhero title Transformers.

Loved the villians the WCA brought in! Beautiful half splash.

Thanks!  My favorite West Coast adversaries were Master Pandemonium and Graviton (with his cohorts, Zzzax, Half-Life and Quantum).

Nice classic work with a wonderful mix of characters that bring a comfortable warm feel of nostalgia!  The many different patterns and textures on all these characters make for a combustable battle page.

I love the idea of a comfortable battle page!

Regardless of how silly these villains are, this era of the title was a lot of fun. How can anyone not love that Cactus Man?!? Awesome!

Thank, R.D.C!  Funny you should mention Cactus as there must have been a change in his body design as the image shown is pasted.  I am assuming there must be art underneath.

That it is, James.  As soon as I saw it, I instantly remembered the storyline and the main behind this particular attack (it's Dominus!).

Englehart and Milgrom made a great team on WCA, packing so much story and characterization into every issue.  Very cool page from their epic run!

Yup, that creative team made a definite impact on my adolescent imagination!

Yeah, I noticed that. Just hold the page up to a lightbulb or to the window on a sunny day and you'll be able to see what's underneath the stats.

Yes!  Love this page, and this issue of WCA in general.  Some out there desert villains...and I was all over it.  Was great seeing these team vs team battles when I was younger, especially when one team you had zero familarity with.  Who would they match up with?  And how?  I considered this page but had gotten another from WCA shortly before so was trying to stay disciplined.  Trying being the operative word there, lol.  Really glad to see it in your gallery!  Congrats!

Yes, it's very hard trying to limit the number of original art pieces in a collection when there are so many fine examples out there.  What helps me is limiting my expenditures is focus on subject matter (OHOTMU villains and minor villain related "splashy" pieces).  That and my extremely limited budget.  The limited budget helps the most!  Thanks for the comment, K!

I don't think I know any of these villains. But a human cactus is a force to be reckoned with! Lots of great action across all these panels.

Yes, most of these villains were a 1 or 2 appearance type (Gila, Butte and Cactus) with the leader, Sunstroke being the most "famous" (C-list) one so I'm not surprised that you are unfamiliar with them.  But I like the silly and obscure criminals and like you said, there is alot of action here.  Thanks for the comment!

You gotta watch out when they throw those spikes...hard! Milgrom battle pages are so fun. He had such a classic marvel/Kirby sensibility, even with his baddies. The west coast pantheon they tried to create was a lot of fun. Great score. Congrats!

Thanks!  The great action is one of major things that attracted me to this page and made me add it to my collection.
