DescriptionHarley & IvyInk 16 1/2" x 13" The the cover for Harley Quinn #4 (DC Comics, 2016) I really enjoy prelim work, as it tends - by its very nature of being a prelim - to be spontaneous and a more true reflection of the artist's vision. Especially with a piece intended for publication, a lot can happen between an artist's start to the finished art. The art director & marketing department can request changes, and censorship can come into play too to make the product more appropriate for more markets. In the case of Harley & Ivy, both women are natural in the prelim and clothed in the published cover. Both pieces of art are very nice, but I honestly think Harley would have looked much better without orange tights placed on her. Social/Sharing |

Wonderful! I often prefer prelims to the final piece

I can't see any difference between this and the printed cover aside from digital color--and some minor digital edits--added over the scanned art. The line art looks identical. Are you sure this is just a prelim and not the actual original art?

You are right Ben. Near as I can tell the pen & ink original acts as the basis - or "skeleton" if you will - of the cover. Sienkiewicz - or a DC colorist - digitally added color to the ink original to produce the finished published cover. I hope to see Bill later in the year, and can find out more about the piece then.
When assigning a category to the ink original, I did debate between "Prelim" and "Cover", since a valid argument could be made for either category. Harley & Ivy is definitely not a prelim in the traditional sense. It is not an artist testing out ideas for an art director to select from; a true prelim would be the Michael Whelan Moreta that is in my collection (where the prelim and finished cover are considerably different).

The variant cover is credited only to Sienkiewicz, so it's probably his color. Pretty much all his covers in recent years, for many different comic publishers, have had that same distinctive coloring style, with no colorists credited, so I'm pretty sure it's his own.
