Description

The lineup of artists on 'New Avengers' has always been an absolute murderer's row of talent. The only shortcoming of that was that few were able to do long, definitive chunks of work on the title.

Thank goodness this was not so with Leinil Yu (and later with Stuart Immonen). Mr Yu was responsible for the lead-up to 'Secret Invasion', stories where a rag-tag group of street-level Avengers tried to stay one step ahead of the law (and were always one step behind the true enemy). The flavor of all these stories is one of our heroes struggling against darkness and paranoia and it only benefited from the consistency and excellence of the artist on the title: Leinil Yu. It was (IS!) absolutely riveting, beautiful, well-crafted stuff.

This page is a gorgeous example from the run, featuring some of my very favorite things about his work on it: (a) his Doctor Strange (b) his Iron Fist, and (c) their funky collars (and probably not in that order :) ). There's a super fun team shot and an outstanding portrait of Luke Cage (replete with the patented Leinil Yu neck-bulging arteries). Is it crazy that I get obsessed with the pattern and the detail in the knit of Luke's cap in the bottom "panel"? I just -love- it...

Congrats! You're right about Yu's work on NA. He did a great run that still stands up well. Nice example you got here with those deft pencils on display. And if you even remotely like LC, how can you not like that last panel?!
