DescriptionSet within the post-Civil War, pre-Secret Invasion landscape, this era’s “unregistered” New Avengers were constantly on the run from Tony Stark’s Mighty Avengers (while simultaneously following a mystery that would ultimately reveal itself as the Skrulls’ most ambitious invasion attempt).Correctly suspecting the New Avengers had set up shop in Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum (apparently derelict, thanks to the good Doctor’s illusion spells), Tony brings in Brother (soon to be Doctor) Voodoo to try and crack any magics Strange may have had in place. The scene was wonderfully tense, darkly and powerfully written, featuring one of comics’ oldest tropes (“Who is stronger: Hero A or Hero B?”) turned on its head (detecting vs. escaping detection; sorcery vs. voodoo). The whole thing, from the ornate door and backgrounds in the first two panels to our heroes’ closeup in panel 5, was impeccably, masterfully drawn by Leinil Yu, who leaned into the dark tone to render an unforgettable Brother Voodoo, the likes of which I had never seen before. Thank you once again, Kwan! Social/Sharing |

Really enjoy Lenil's pencil work. I think he's a master of tone and texture. And Kwan is the best too!

Tremendous page. The moody pencils build up to that terrifying 4th panel very nicely. Great page!

Leinil Yu uses that thin pencil line to make a super detailed illustrative work with variation of crosshatching tightness and shadows. Brother Voodoo with Spidey, Luke and Wolvie are all drawn with loads of charisma!

Bendis really brought out all the 70s/80s B, C & D listers characters in this run. Yu drew a creepy Voodoo indeed, as he should be given his name.

Brother Voodoo needs a horror series. Seriously, he's a great character, plenty dark, and his superpower is voodoo...Horror City! I'd read that comic. Yu did such a great job on this run, with his gritty pencils and wonderfully moody scenes. He can make anyone look dark and circumspect. And those shrunken heads! Happy Halloween, indeed. I so dig this page. Congrats!

I agree 100%, J H! This page stunned me when I first saw it all those years ago, and it still has that same effect on me. Leinil was such an inspired choice of artist for this run, where everything was darker in tone, and benefited greatly from a single artist to guide us all through as readers. Incredible work from a special talent. And I, too, would absolutely adore a Brother Voodoo horror comic. Here's hoping! Sincere thanks, J H (and everyone!) for your terrific comments.

Great page, man, and yes, the darker elements being brought in with Voodoo were rendered very nice indeed by Yu! Check out the big panel here - whew! And I gotta give Bendis credit for bringing Voodoo in in the the first place - was so cool to see. And it's cool seeing Yu's pencils so clearly, isn't it?! All capped by the 3 bad boys at the bottom, with a big lenses McFarlanesque Spidey in middle. Ohh yeah. Congrats!

Yu, master of cross-hatching, had his BEST period of art during his Ult Wolverine v Hulk/ New Avengers years IMO. And this page is a PERFECT example of his gritty, raw, and rough style depicting a dark time for our heroes.
The progression of panels throughout provides proof of Yu's professionalism and artistry. There is a rising build-up of energy and mystery crescendoing in the large panel giving us the money shot of Brother Voodoo in all his voodoo glory. The cross-hatching on the character is utterly splendid to pour over. Yu did Brother Voodoo great justice there.
And as you called attention to iit in your description, the final panel displaying the onlooking heroes possesses a glorious cinematic quality to it. With MORE beautiful cross-hatching on Luke Cage, Spidey, and Wolverine.
This page is a new favorite of mine on CAF. Thank you for sharing it on CAF here with us, Jason. All the best!
