Description

There have been some beautiful Leinil Yu pieces posed lately, and I wanted to participate in the fun by adding add a couple more that I picked up last year; a really cool two-page sequence from Jonathan Hickman’s great ‘Avengers’ run. No dumb ‘can of raid’ or ‘bug hunt’ jokes here... Just....wow. The level of detail and subtle touch (which is not something one usually associates with a page being overrun by space termites) is (say it with me here!) out of this world.

(Probably should have stuck with a can of Raid joke.)

And, quite possibly, the only thing Mr. Yu draws better than monsters or space termites is spacecraft (a couple cool examples of which are also present). Some process junkie love going on here, with the panel numbering above each frame, to get the narrative flow correct in post-production. Plus, Annihilus?!? Love this.

How many times do you think he sharpened his pencil while working on this one?

Thank you once more, Kwan!

Man, that's an awful lot of insect lines he needed to draw! Very nice pencil work. You know, it didn't even occur to me until a few years ago that Annihilus actually looks like a giant man-insect. Am I the only one it took decades to see that?

The Hussanator reaches into his bag and retrieves a Yu diamond... top talent hailing from a country rich in artistic contributions to the medium of comics.  How many times did he sharpen his pencil, indeed.  Can just imagine him hunched over his desk bringing this gorgeous example to life!

Some next level line work here, whew.  Yu is MEAN with that graphite.  And the page feels bigger than it is, with those 4 evenly sized vertical panels (slightly stairstepped - subtle goodness) and the sheer amount of art in each.  Now that you mention, Yu does do some great spacecraft, and tech in general.  And Annihilus?  One of the best villain designs ever.  Congrats on the back the back pages, Jason!

Four verticals means Yu called the play on this page and wanted Annihilus to go deep to throw the bug bomb!

I think he wore out the sharpener. I really dig Yu's style, with all that detail and motion. He crowds a scene without it feeling crowded, imo. And Annihilus! One of my favorite Kirby Kreations. Do you think his inker cries when he sees all that work? ;) Very cool page, Jason. Congrats!

An absolutely incredible level of detail here.  Yu outdid himself.

You know I'm not as big on Yu as you are but that third panel is truly fantastic and the choice of vertical layouts for the whole page really adds to the urgency of the invasion.

(It reminds me of a Hitch splash I own actually ;)

Others have commented here about the vertical panels and I have to call them out too. These are sleek with so much detail within all four of them. Yu's patience and skill as an artist is apparent here. And look! The page is punctuated with an out-reached hand in the bottom right. I DIG it.

Thanks for sharing!

Mind blowing pencils by Lienil Yu! There's like a million pencils lines on this one page! How many pencils do you think he uses up per page?
