DescriptionSome folks may not be aware that after Foster retired from drawing PRINCE VALIANT and handed the reins over to John Cullen Murphy, he continued to draw layouts for the strip which he gave to Murphy to use.At the end of March 2022, Nate D, Sanders auctioned off a lot of John Cullen Murphy's originals and Hal Foster preliminaries for PRINCE VALIANT. Murphy's daughter decided to sell these pieces of art and auction had a great many featured. I bid on this Foster prelim which I felt showcased his drawing ability better than most of the rest and was happy to win the auction. I had about seven of the prelims on my watch list, but only bid on the one I wanted most. There were a few others that were interesting because Foster had done some ink sketching which I also found quite interesting, but I ended up only bidding on one prelim, as I figured one representative was enough in my collection. If I had lost on the one I wanted most, I would have bid on others, but fortunately I got the one I wanted most - which coincidentally was for one day prior to my 18th Birthday. One of the things I love about these Foster Valiant prelims is that although many of the prelims were very rough, many others showed that Foster was still an artist at heart. Included in the auction lot were also the two typewritten pages of instructional text. These are also somewhat interesting as one page gives the dialogue for the strip and the other suggests staging for the drawings in the Sunday. These are also shown here in the additional images along with the Sunday page as completed by Murphy and printed. Social/Sharing |

The grid lines inform us on where he places single and double characters in focus. Very cool pencil work that has a fine polish showing that he still had talent to spare.

Nice pickup - I managed to miss this auction despite having signed up just prior...ah well, happy we didn't get into a bidding war on this one!

Great choice. Getting to peek behind the curtains and Foster's process is a real treat.
