I have had this art for some time but failed to post it here on CAF. Golden age sketches by comic book artists are quite rare. After all there were no conventions and comic book artists were not as popular as those that did syndication strips.

The Boy Commandos were published from 1942 to 1949. However this sketch includes the Jans character who was replaced after the end of the war. Further Joe Simon did his military service from 1943 to 1945. Therefore 1942 is the most likely date for this sketch.

I asked Joe if he remembered the Zenners but he did not, that they were likely just fans. Leo and Francine Zenner appear in the 1940 Census, Francine 8 years old, Leo 6. Living in Syracuse, NY. with parents Samson B. and Blanche M. Zenner. Prior to moving to New York City and working in comic books, Joe had lived and been a newspaper staff artist in Syracuse.
