DescriptionBecause there is more to comics than the stupid super heroes we all love, here comes a fantastic and splendid piece from master artist & storyteller, Ricardo Delgado. This was to be one of the 12 signed lithographs of the (too?) ambitious carnivorous serie based on Age of Reptiles. Sadly for its fans, this lithograph serie was discontinued after the release of the fourth one. Dark Horse had the good idea and taste to compile all 12 in a rare Age of Reptiles calendar in 1999. This one was also an instant favorite for obvious reasons. It’s just full of life. Dinosaurs, both adult and young, mammal, bird, fishes of various species, another small reptile… And the scenery/backgrounds are simply fantastic. You can feel the bright sun hammering the animals given how few shadows are cast. No color needed to get a sense of the water flowing in the river bed. On that note a small detail I find excellent is the shadow of a leaf on the back of one of the bigger fishes on the left. Just a small detail many would consider irrelevant but it gives depth to the scene. Lastly, the sense of movement is great here as each animal really feels alive and is infused with personality. A Moebius level quality illustration in my humble opinion both in terms of line and storytelling. I will conclude by copy pasting the legend from the calendar that Ricardo wrote: Early Cretaceous Europe 30 feet Scientists theorize that Baryonyx’s large foreclaw may have been used to catch fish like the Grizzly bear does today. Thin teeth that would have held a squirming fish firmly is further evidence of Baryonyx having a primarily aquatic diet. Social/Sharing |

Masterful. The trick of creating thst slope with almost no shading, only using three shadows and geologic layers at angles, is amazing. The slight water distortions and motion just done with line work and perfectly setting a scene is really something. You're right, the artistry is something else. Congrats!
