DescriptionBecause there is more to comics than the stupid super heroes we all love, here comes a fantastic and splendid piece from master artist & storyteller, Ricardo Delgado.Once upon a time, there were to be 12 signed lithographs of the (too?) ambitious carnivorous series based on Age of Reptiles. Sadly for its fans, this lithograph series was discontinued after the release of the fourth one. And this was the actual fourth one, released in early 1998. (Dark Horse had the good idea and taste to compile all 12 in a rare Age of Reptiles calendar in 1999). It is also the image Ricardo chose as a cover to the first (and only) omnibus collection to Age of Reptiles released by Dark horse in 2011. So, vintage Age of Reptiles art, twice honoured by publication (3 times if you count the calendar). This may be the most significant AoR piece to date. This one was probably my least favourite lithograph which says a lot about the quality of the other 3 considering how superb it is. I probably appreciate it more nowadays as a father myself than I did when it was released and when founding a family was not high on my priorities ^^. I was also told it was the favourite AoR image of the Delgado family so I’m forever humbled and thankful that Ricardo let me purchase it from him and take (good) care of it for as long as I will be able to. Now about the piece itself. It just radiates family and life. This is indeed a family of Crylophosaurs. The adult I was told is the mother. Because if we extrapolate actual reptiles behaviour to dinosaurs, daddy Crylophosaur wouldn’t have cared much for what happened to the eggs much less to the new-borns (or maybe for a quick snack?). And mommy looks perfect here. I find she both looks content but aware of her surroundings in order to protect anything happening to her children. Her eyes clearly say that she is not to be messed with. I also love the daring move Ricardo made by having her laying on her flank (because let’s be real, when you have but two working legs, however powerful, it must not be that easy to quickly get up in case of danger). The children are basically having fun in the sun and I love the different positions and body languages Ricardo chose for them. I love the interaction between the one hiding in her shadows-seemingly smiling?-and the one hissing at him that he won’t get the jump on him. The third one, the frail one I’d say, is staying close to/on momma and enjoying the silly games of her/his siblings. Children will be children obviously. Another bold move from Ricardo is that he subtly implies that the appendages on their heads move and react with emotions as those of the hissing child are erect with anger when he notices the other one trying to surprise him. And the scenery/backgrounds are simply fantastic as always. You can tell momma Crylophosaur choose a strategic spot to have her back against and spot potential incoming danger from afar while relaxing. You can also feel the old age of the rocks, both big and small, which gives depth to the scene, something Ricardo is a subtle master at (see the dust layer on the rock behind her for one?). Again, this to me is a Moebius level quality illustration both in terms of line and storytelling. And of course the piece is gi-gan-tic. A delight to experience in person. This is part 6 of my 2021 CAF b-day party and we are already halfway through. Hope you like it so far. Social/Sharing |

An excellent write up for an excellent piece. Congratulations for putting as much care and thought into your description as Ricardo put into drawing the piece. I'm sure he would appreciate it. As a fan, I know I do.

Yes, I concur about the excellent write up. But you know how we often tell other collectors, when asked "Have you read this or that?", "Not yet, but I have it. It's in my 'read when I have time' pile." ? Well if Fred keeps up these essay like descriptions, I'm going to have no choice but to put all his descriptions in my "read when I have time" pile! 😉

Sorry, I get wordy when I write about art and/dinos ˆˆ
And it's probably better than the opposite, right?
Then again it's MY b-day so I can whatever I want, right?
And you can read me on the toilet, I don't mind ;)
