DescriptionI love all things Spidey 2099, so this cover is definitely one of my favorites from the run. Here we have a great image of Spider-Man (Otto Octavius) battling Spider-Man 2099 (Miguel O'Hara), drawn by the fabulous Ryan Stegman, from a story called "Smack to the Future." (I also love any tongue-in-cheek reference to the movie franchise "Back to the Future.") During the battle, Otto tries to slash Miguel, only to discover that Miguel's suit is made from Unstable Molecules. Miguel proceeds to call Otto "Low-Tech," which totally pisses off the egomaniac, as he truly believes himself to be "superior." There's a bunch more stuff in the issue about different possible timelines, the evil Tiberius Stone & his future son Tyler, how Tiberius's act of sabotage led to the destruction of Horizon Labs and the rise of Alchemax (which coincidentally is about to happen RIGHT NOW), a call from Mary Jane which Otto rudely brushes off, some nefarious bits involving octobots, etc etc ... I'll have to read that whole story again. But to me, the highlight is the mano a mano battle between the two Spider-Men. I also like how the original art includes a really cool background that they weirdly decided to edit out in the published colorized version. Social/Sharing |

That's fantastic Paul! I guess they were trying to go for a clean look on the published cover, but the art looks much better with the building in it.

I too wish the building was in the published comic. It is still a really cool looking cover though!!!

That’s super odd, that background is badass. Another great addition!

So ironic isn't it? These days, when plenty of artists lazily leave the art "background free" often enough, Marvel stupidly edits out completely the detailed background Stegman spent hours doing. The Hous of Lame Ideas strikes again. Really nice Stegman addition!

Oddly enough, the building background version adds depth and is quite cool, but I also understand the choice and like the published version focusing more on the epic fall and battle of the two Spideys. But hey, that cover really kicks ass, huge congrats on that awesome art, Paul!!!

I always loved the dynamic perspective on this one, but it always bugged me that there was no background. Now I know Marvel took it out. Awesome Cover!

I think what happened is this book came out the same time as Frozen and since that movie bombed so bad at the box office they tried to recoup their losses by less printing and colour on cover.

That's ridiculous they cleared the background on the published cover! But the art is brilliant. Congrats, Paul

Paul P does it yet again on the Stegman front :) I loved this arc and this was a great image from it - Superior vs. 2099! I've seen it in person and it's killer. I'm actually not sure if it was better to take off the background as opposed to leaving...but in any case it's cool seeing it on the OA! Dynamic battle page between these 2 Spideys! Congrats!

Art better than the cover clearly, but maybe, maybe, the walls would have ruined the lisibility on the cover.
Great cover anyway !
