Descriptionc.Jan 1940. Disney Studio prepared cel to be sold by the Courvoisier Galleries to cross promote the feature film "Pinocchio"(released Feb 7,1940)with the Donald shorts. This is a very rare hand-inked, hand-painted parody cel of Donald as the coachman from the Pleasure Island Sequence in "Pinocchio", complete even with a toy donkey. On full 16 field nitrate sheet and placed over a wood veneer background with a clear cover cel. The masterful press campaign for "Pinocchio" included a mock story with PIC MAGAZINE in the May 14th,1940 issue. It seems that Donald was sulking because he wasn't allowed to play a starring role in "Snow White". When Walt Disney started production on "Pinocchio" he foresaw he'd have trouble, so he planned a dozen short subjects to keep Donald busy. But Donald quacked at the directors, at Walt, and everyone. Finally Donald made himself up in the roles in "Pinocchio", any one of which he felt he could play. To each impersonation Walt said, "Your not the type". Finally to keep Donald from picketing "Pinocchio" as he threatened, PIC MAGAZINE promised to show how Donald Duck would look playing each role in "Pinocchio". This cel is but one example of his many roles. Numbered 3310-10. Jim Lentz, the animation director at Heritage Auction informed me that he contacted the Disney Animation Research Department and was told that the promotional series was titled "Donocchio". Later this title resurfaced in "The Wonderful Mis-Adventures of Donocchio" published (Jan. 1946) in Four Color 92, written and drawn by Walt Kelly, with Donald playing the role of Pinocchio as Donocchio.
