Description15" x 10" image area. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Sub-Mariner #26 Page 19 RARE THIRD APPEARANCE OF RED RAVEN SINCE 1940 Original Art (Marvel 1970). Sal Buscema and Mike Esposito. The Red Raven was one of the earliest Marvel heroes and the first to premiere in his own title, Red Raven Comics #1 (1940). The title was canceled after the first issue and the character did not appear again for 28 years until Roy Thomas brought him back in X-Men #44 (May 1968). The Red Raven then battled Namor, the Sub-Mariner in Sub-Mariner #26 (1970). He died in that issue, something writer Roy Thomas seemed to do to all of the timely characters he would revive in the late 60s and early 70s. Almost 30 years later the character showed up alive in a 1999 issue of Nova. The Sub-Mariner and Red Raven, two of Marvel's earliest characters, battle for the first time on this page from Sub-Mariner #26 (1970) illustrated by Sal Buscema (pencils) and Mike Esposito (inks). This was only Red Raven's third appearance despite the fact that he first appeared in 1940. On this page, Red Raven tries to revive his henchmen, "The Winged Ones" from suspended animation to help in his battle, only to learn, as Namor points out, that they are all dead. Social/Sharing |
