I think this piece refers back to ASM #257, sans Spider Man in his black costume.
Frenz's run on Spider Man was flawed from the beginning. He tried to riff Ditko and nobody can do that successfully. So, under his own admission, he was "fired" from his gig on Spider Man.
How fortunate for us !! Frenz moved to Thor and offered us a spectacular riff on King Kirby's style. Enhanced by memorable inking by Breeding and Sinnott, this run is memorable to this very day !
Given all of the above, this commission is even more impressive. In my opinion, Frenz could do Spider Man or Thor again and be very successful.

I think more than anything, Ron's removal from the book was as a result of getting caught in the crossfire between DeFalco and Priest, over the Hobgoblin identify saga. Rather than being anything to do with his chosen style.

Since Frenz had extensive workings with DeFalco on Thor, I guess DeFalco's vision of Hobgoblin's identity won out?

Actually no one really got their way in the end. DeFalco and Frenz wanted Richard Fisk to be the HG, but were removed from the book before its conclusion. Peter David was then bought in by Priest to finish the story, with Ned Leeds being revealed as the HG. However this just pissed off readers. In the end, after 10 years, Roger Stern was bought back on to write "Hobgoblin Lives", where his original choice for secret identity, Roderick Kingsley, was finally cemented as the original HG. Basically it was one huge mess, that in my opinion ended up curtailing the DeFalco/Frenz run, which is a great era of ASM!

Fromt he logo and the style, Frenz was bringing Silver Age fun to the this one and adding Puma is a nod to his time on the title. That fire escape going up and up and up is really cool under the webbed logo.
