This is an exquisite original piece illustrated and colored by William Steig, the man who created the character Shrek for a children's book back in 1990 and which later was turned into one of the most beloved trilogy of movies in cinematic history.

The most interesting thing about this piece in my opinion, is that Steig created Shrek only 20 years ago, yet this little girl not only has similar physical characteristics to how Shrek looks, but he also colored her green. That may not seem surprising if you think it to be normal for the guy who created Shrek to draw little girls in a similar style, but the interesting thing is that this piece dates back to the 1940's! It surfaced a while back along with a few other drawings by Steig, some of which were found to have been published in Collier's Magazine way back then. So this illustration gives some pause for thought and makes one wonder if it is possible that Steig may have already had the little seed of the idea in his mind back then, which ultimately sprouted into Shrek a full 50 to 60 years later!

I assume that the illustration was originally drawn on a scrap piece of paper which Steig later thought too nice to throw away, because the image is a cut out and then glued down on this little board which he then turned into a makeshift Christmas card for someone. The browning around the image is the staining from the glue that was used to paste the art down.

The art is on a thin sturdy board measuring 5 5/16 x 4 1/16.
