Description

This cover depicts the first appearance of Man-Ape, a favorite character of mine. In this issue we get the first real taste of internecine warfare within Wakanda, expanding the Black Panther canon in important ways. M'Baku has designs to replace the White Gorilla as Wakanda's god instead of the Panther god and to take over as ruler from T'Challa.

The cover itself has the main image on a bristol board affixed to another bristol board.

This was the end of Big John's first continuous run on Avengers starting with #41, so represents a sort of bookend to his early work at Marvel. I think with Man-Ape's magnificent design we are getting a taste of Buscema's preference for animal imagery over pure super-heroics.

Great Buscema cover. But let's not forget Klein's inks play a big part. The light is such that you truly feel the heat from the melting background. Marvel classic!

This is such an awesome cover--I too have always thought the Man-Ape design was awesome, and love the contrast between Man-Ape's white costume and T'Challa's sleek black costume. The unique technology design of the background is unusual for Big John but executed so well--as are the equisite inks by George Klein. And floating heads! Top it all off with the cool "Mighty Avengers" logo (first used on this issue)--and you have a perfect representation of Marvel magic. Congrats!

Stunning cover by John Buscema and George Klein! Man-Ape looks pretty pissed off on this cover and it looks like he's going to take it out on Black Panther. Love Buscema's work on Avengers during this era. This is a classic example of the fun storytelling back then. Great pick-up!

Woooo!! Ric Flair exclamation - had to do it! A classic image and an outstanding piece of art by one of the best to ever do it! Killer early Panther image and story, and the cover absolutely does what a cover should make you want to do - pick up the book to see what's up inside! Huge congrats!
