Description

"Brand New Day" introduced us to a brand new Goblin character named Menace, and it turned out to be the very first female Goblin --- Lily Hollister, daughter of District Attorney William Hollister. She dated the newly/suddenly resurrected Harry Osborn and was friends with Carlie Cooper, who became Peter's girlfriend later on.

When Lily uncovered the location of one of Norman Osborn's secret rooms and found all of the Goblin's equipment, she accidentally knocked over some experimental Goblin chemicals, absorbing them into her skin. She was now able to transform into her "Menace" form at will.

A few years back I was able to acquire the cover to Amazing Spider-Man #550, which featured the very 1st appearance of Menace (face in silhouette -- see additional pic). So I was very happy to recently add this #551 cover as a nice companion piece, where Spidey and a full figure Menace are locked in battle. I'm always a big fan of Spidey vs Goblin covers, so this one is a real treasure for me.

Thanks for looking!

Awesome cover from a pretty fun time in Spidey comics! Wish I knew where you were finding all these great covers! Are you a time traveller, Paul?!

With Spidey being my favorite character, I can be pretty picky about the way he is drawn.  Honestly, I feel that most artists never get him quite right.  For me, it usually ranges from not bad to downright awful.  But I love the Spidey figure on this cover.  The anatomy, pose, articulation, all really solid.  Been a fan of Sal's for a long time.  In looking at this cover, he only seems to be getting better.  Congrats buddy!

I really like the Spidey figure and the camera angle makes it dynamic as well! Much like my descriptions of the X-Men forever series however, I'm utterly confused here. If I understand correctly, some female turned into a Goblin character after chemicals spilled on her. Okay, but who's the dude on the Goblin Glider on the cover? Is he "Menace", or is Menace the new Goblin girl you're talking about? Enquiring mind wants to know! Oh, and while we all prefer backgrounds whenever possible, this is one of those rare cases where I prefer the original lacking a background, because what in the world was the colorist think when he/she chose to drop in a photo of the moon?!? Is the Goblin's glider now powerful enough to carry two people into outer space? You know, I think I should try reading this story and then see if I can explain it to you, while you try X-Men Forever and try to explain it to me! I'm just so glad the wonderful thing about collecting art is that we can get great art featuring characters we love, whether or not we found the story confusing or not. Or even better, whether or not we even ever read the story the art is from. After all, when all is said and done, it should be all about the characters and the art!

I guess I could have been more clear with my description.  On this cover, Spider-Man is fighting the Goblin character "Menace," who is later revealed to be Lily Hollister, who was Harry Osborn's girlfriend.  Part of the fun of the mystery of Menace was that no one suspected that this new Goblin could be female, especially a character as sweet as Lily.

Brand New Day was a very fun read, and I do recommend it.  I remember also being really happy at the time because ASM started coming out three times a month, which gave me hope that I would live long enough to see issue 1000.  Thankfully, the title continues to come out multiple times each month, and with all the tremendous advances in medicine (and my new exercise regimen), I am now gunning for issue 2000.
You made me laugh with your observation about the Goblin's "outer space glider." I actually had a title stat overlay made special for this piece, but the moon proved too problematic.  But I like it better this way too. I also agree with you that it is great when you need know nothing about the specific story to enjoy the artwork.
And finally, I will NEVER understand X-Men Forever, but I did enjoy reading it.

Oooooh! Okay, no it wasn't you. I guess my confusion stems from the fact that I never saw a female Goblin on that glider. I mean, we all know how every single artist loves to draw every single female in comics with double-d cup sizes, and this Goblin is drawn without even a hint of an A cup. Plus, the physique in general, especially the arms and legs, looks male. I guess they just wanted to give her more of an androgenous appearance. Whatever, I'm glad the confusion is cleared up now.

Wasn't Brand New Day the story in which Marvel essentially told readers they had to pretend that all of Peter's personal relationship with MJ for the previous 2 decades never happened? I love MJ and I love that they got married. It was a natural progression of their relationship. So I can't read something that tells me to pretend none of that ever happened. But hey, you say it was good so I'll take your word for it! As for hoping you lived long enough to see the 1000th issue of a comic book, man, you need some bigger dreams! Oh wait, you DO have bigger dreams than that. You want to live to see issue #2000! 😅 Well I sincerely hope you make it, pal! Btw, I didn't know you had read X-Men Forever! It's funny, although there were some things that confused me, I actually enjoyed reading it!

Who is Spider-Man? He's a criminal that's who he is! A vigilante! A public menace!  Somehow this web headed freak is working with this new Goblin and up to no good!  I want the wall-crawling arachnid prosecuted! I want him strung up by his web!  Now, you want a hero to believe in?  I believe in Mysterio!  He's a real hero.

While I didn't like the undoing of Peter and MJ's marriage, I have to admit that I enjoyed the stories during "Brand New Day" more than I had enjoyed Spidey in years at that time.  This is a fantastic cover from that really fun era.

Sweet!  Spidey vs Menace, before we knew who Menace was - as the cover says, a mystery :)  Larroca's style is so clean - there are not wasted lines, and you can appreciate that in his work.  Not easy to do.  Congrats, Paul!

Menace is about to taste Spider Knuckles about 1 second after this cover. An Osborne right of passage, if you will. That's a great cinematic battle pose. I always like the interplay with the logo, too. Very cool Spidey cover from Larroca. Congrats!

Outstanding cover, Paul!  I really enjoy the "less is more" approach Salvador takes with his work, and it's a home run on this terrific piece, where there's nothing to focus on but the great poses, costumes, and anatomy (along with the super-exciting premise of the battle contained within, of course)!  Great, clean inking here, too: an absolutely lovely piece.  Congrats, Paul - your astonishing collection continues to grow and grow and become even more beauteous! :)
