Description

Popeye nasce nel 1929 nella striscia a fumetti "Thimble Theater" dalla mano del grande artista statunitense E. C. Segar e da allora viene pubblicato da King Features Syndicate (USA). Nel corso degli anni Popeye è apparso in albi a fumetti, cartoni animati, film, videogiochi, pubblicità e in un’immensità di altri prodotti, divenendo uno dei personaggi a fumetti più famosi ed amati al mondo.

Dopo la morte del suo creatore, Popeye continuerà ad apparire nelle strisce disegnate da vari altri autori, primo fra tutti Bud Sagendorf, assistente ed allievo di Segar. Sagendorf contribuirà in maniera decisiva alla caratterizzazione del personaggio, pur mantenendosi sempre vicino allo stile classico del suo maestro.

Questa striscia giornaliera, pubblicata nel 1974, mi ha colpito per la presenza di tre dei personaggi principali, per l'ambientazione marina e per l'immancabile errore grammaticale ("lorst"). Ma soprattutto mi ha emozionato per lo sconforto del nostro eroe sapendo Poldo (Wimpy) disperso in mare e per la prontezza di Olivia nel trovare la soluzione per recuperarlo!
