DescriptionA huge Valentine's Day gift from my other half, thank you! This particular art piece checks so many boxes for me and my collection. First off, it's an extremely early art piece of my pride and joy collection of X-Men (July 1966, according the comics code stamp on the back it was approved in March 1966). Secondly, having first generation X-Men characters (Cyclops and Iceman) in their original costumes is a cornerstone for my collection, using their powers none-the-less as an extra bonus. Thirdly, getting work from the second generation of people that created X-MEN; Jack Kirby handing off (in some manner) artwork duties to Werner Roth (credited as Jay Gavin, codename he utilized since he was still contracted to DC at this time, created from the two names of his children); Paul Reinman handing off inking to Chic Stone, then to Dick Ayers for his long run; Sam Rosen handing off letters to Artie Simek; and the ultimate handoff of Stan Lee passing the torch of storytelling to the Roy Thomas, but still remaining on as editor. And as a bonus getting the first and maybe only use of the codename Uncanny Unicorn. The X-Men comics and related series, have really shaped my life for both personal and professionally. Getting this monumental page of artwork, early in the X-Men history, is marvelous in every sense of the word; it's uncanny for me to believe that I have a piece of X-Men history like this in my collection. Homecoming week for obscure villains? Yes, there is defintely something of that in some of these X-Men stories that seemed to grab a bunch of also-rans in order to pit them against our merry mutants. Even villains that emerged in these post-Kirby pre-Adams issues seemed to fall instantly by the wayside to the extent that some of them never came back into the light...Well, does that prevent it to be all full of fun and thrills? Definetly not! The Thomas/Roth/Ayers (& Simek!) team is already running at full speed with a special nod to Werner Roth for his ultra-tight storytelling skills! Quite an influence indeed Oh, by the way, when you say these stories shaped your life professionally, do you mean you run a school for gifted youngsters? Graymalkin Lane and all?

Wow! Vintage awesomeness here with this classic X-Men page. OG costumes and I love that head shot of Cyke at the bottom left. Definitely see why you consider it one of the cornerstones of your collection! Congrats!

That is a really cool page. Werner Roth X-Men is underrated, in my opinion. I loved his run on X-Men.
