DescriptionNow this one has quite the story. This is both my most expensive piece and the longest wait, as painter extraordinaire Alex Maleev and I had started discussing end of 2019.Typically, Alex doesn’t do “commissions” in a traditional way. He does pieces and these pop up at Kirby’s. If he has the time, though, before a convention, you can name a character; he agrees et voila. Well, silly me had already started bugging Alex and I had simply said what I had in mind – a Daredevil, tired and broken, leaning against some debris, maybe New York. Originally, I had gone for a pre-con commission for Lake Como in May 2020, which didn’t happen due to COVID – Alex had done a beautiful Daredevil bust, which unfortunately got lost somewhere in September of that year. That kind of stung, but as a true dea ex machina, Annabel from Kirby’s Comic Art Shop came to the rescue & offered to help me out. We kept in touch regularly and (due to my request that became more specific), it took some time. Fast-forward to May 2021, and I got a message from Annabel that Alex did this for me. And that’s pretty special, I’ve heard. About the piece: I’ve been looking for a Maleev piece for a while – some of you may have gotten a message or two over the years. I never expected to have a personal piece, at that, from probably my favorite artist on one of my favorite characters. Size is a bit bigger than 11x17 and this is the cover quality commission level – basically, the highest you can go. This was done in "watercolor, dyes, goashe, pencils", according to Alex. Maleev's run make him the premiere Daredevil artist of his time. With Bendis' decompressed storytelling, he could tell a story with just one image to merge the words. This piece does that even without words and leaves us thinking if Daredevil is looking down upon us to save us, or he's just as broken with inner conflict as the rest of us.

Absolutely. Very well put, Marcus! That inner struggle has always captivated me immensly, with Matt Murdock. So I definitely wanted a piece that reflected that quality of the Man Without Fear.

Fabulous piece! And it sounds like you had to travel around the Horn to get it. Love reading collectors' stories on CAF!

I do, too! So I keep that in mind when writing down mine! A piece can only be "so good", unless it has a meaningful story behind it, I feel. Well, for commissions, mostly. Thanks so much for the nice comment!

Cover quality is exactly right. This piece is so memorable both for the art and for the backstory. I'm always blown away at how Maleev uses color to bring such strong emotion to his work. Huge congrats on adding this to your great collection!

Thanks so much, Kent! Actually, it's funny that you should mention that. The colours pop extremely well with some direct sunlight. It lightens up the entire piece - while if it's just under LED light, it feels a bit darker (but still works very well). First time I've noticed that in a painting at this scale. The scan is a more towards the "sunny side", FYI.

Love it. The way he differentiates all of the different reds throughout, both on DD and the background, is a real testament to his skills and command of color. Congrats!

Absolutely. The blend reminds me of his best Daredevil covers & work. A clear theme and colour, but a lot of nuance throughout. Thanks!

Amazing piece- and a great story too!
It's the pieces that start out as an idea, stuck in our heads, that become the favorites in our collections- you put that seed into an artist's mind and see what blooms!
My favorite part of collecting- seeing what the artist comes up with!

I can only agree. I think the best example of that is my Ron Garney cover swipe. That idea had been gestating in my head for at least 10 years - ever since seeing that original Amazing Spider-Man cover.
