Description

Chris Bachalo and Jason Aaron spent the first half of their outstanding Doctor Strange run introducing us to new threats to Stephen Strange's corner of the block (like The Empirikul and Mr. Misery), and then, with Strange's world in tatters and the magic all but gone (and with us all excited to see exactly where they would take us next), they brought back some of the older Rogues like Nightmare, Dormammu, and, of course, Baron Mordo.

Boy, do I love the inking on that tree behind him, blackened and charred - one of the same trees to which the Empirikul were tying wizards and burning them a few scant issues before. Some deliciously chilling dramatic irony, especially considering the relationship Mordo has always had with Dormammu, and the conversation they’re engaged in at the moment. It’s all underscored in the bottom panel, mostly shadow, with Mordo cornered as the darkness closes in around him.

This dominant characteristic of Mordo - of him ALWAYS biting off more than he can chew in his quest to destroy Doctor Strange, and ALWAYS seeking help from the most ill-advised sources - causes me to pity him in a way I don’t with most arch-villains. That’s Mordo’s “template”: doomed to repeat that cycle, never learning from his mistakes - all self-centered ego - never growing out of his belief that he is deserving of (and owed) his victory.

Great Mordo page!  And I love all that black in the bottom panel.

Love the choices he made in the composition of the top panel. The circle formed by the trees connects to the figure in the foreground. The placement of the intact windows in black leads the eye down diagonally from top left to bottom right. Seems quite deliberate on Bachalo's part. Nice pick up!

Excellent point, Yo.  With Mordo hunched over like that, and the tree, in turn, hunched over him (and with its shadow spreading to the upper left of the panel, through the tree and windows), it looks like some black claw or pincer closing in on him (all the while, in true Mordo form, he is focused on his desire and unaware of the - quite literal - foreshadowing).  I didn't pick all that up, Yo, and now I can't not see it!  Thank you (and all) for the great comment!

Wonderful world building by Bachalo where you can appreciate the background just as much as it informs you of the character's inner thoughts and emotional state.  You can see that Mordo is twisted up inside and in body language as much as the trees around him appear to be.

I'm glad you mentioned the tree, because the two tree trunks are actually my favourite parts of this page, technically speaking. I love how he delineated the background tree on the left, the trunk specifically, even more than the one in the right hand foreground. Wonderful stuff. Lovely shot of Baron Mordo, too!

I wanted to make sure I hit this one up before calling it a night. Great, broody image up top using all of Bachalo's strengths. The movement and hidden nature of the next panel twist are pitch perfect. Lovely pick up!

The pathos that you described is etched onto Mordo's face here, his clenched fist... Bachalo is the master of understated meaning. Thus he was the best for Death, and worked wonders on Dr. Strange & Co., I feel.  Congrats on another spot-on curated pickup, my friend.

That inking is disgustingly good. To have so many light and dark values to emphasize depth and Mordo, while whiting the other values to make the page pop with depth and crisp detail is masterful stuff. Especially with that level of background detail. There's grains on the boards over the windows, and you can see the nails. Bachalo and Townsend clearly wanted to nail this scene, and they did. Another gorgeous page, Jason. Big congrats!

Thank you, J H.  Yeah, the inking on this one really took my breath away.  Mr. Bachalo has had the great good fortune of working with some excellent inkers (John Livesay, Al Vey, and many others), but there's something about the Townsend / Bachalo combo that is (wait for it...) magical.  Excellent comment (as always), J H - thank you (and everyone) so much for posting.

Another great Bachalo Doc page, Jason, and Townsend exqusitely inks it.  Love the scene setting up top, great background, and a seething Mordo.  THEN, you move to that mostly blacked in panel when Dormammu starts talking.  Great stuff.  The more and more I see Bachalo's Doc pages, the more I'm convinced he really made a lasting artistic contribution to the character.  Congrats!
