Description

This twisted X-Men: TAS cel of Evil Morph came out for sell a few years ago and I was able to snag it for nearly the cost of the auction fee. It comes from the episode of Season 2, TIL DEATH DO US PART, when the character of Morph unexpectedly came back from the dead and returned as an evil counterpart to the original character.

Ron Rubin was the voice actor for Morph in this series, which initially killed him in the first season episode 2, NIGHT OF THE SENTINELS. The character felt betrayed and left behind after he was literally stomped to “death” and left behind as the X-Men were fleeing from the Sentinels. From the makers of the series (Eric and Julia Lewald), this character was not expected to return, but by popular demand, this character was a hit and a wonderful surprise to bring back. Of course, when they did bring him back he was the darker, evil remnant that was left behind and rescued by Sinister.

The character of Morph was created for the series, inspired by two characters from the comics that had similar powers: MIMIC (Calvin Rankin, who first appeared in X-Men in issue #19 and resembled the powers of the original X-Men, more specifically Angel, Beast and Cyclops, when he first appeared) and Changeling (Kevin Sydney, first appeared in X-Men in issue #35, and eventually faked being Professor X and died soon after in issue #42). The “Morph” character in comics came soon after the animated series version, in X-Men AGE OF APOCALYPSE and really came more to fame as a main character in the original run of the series, EXILES.

This beautifully done large headshot painted cel represents both the love for the X-MEN: TAS series and the twisted yet lovable complicated character that is Morph.

One of the most fun characters of X-Men 97! They did him dirty in the original series because Cyclops would have the team and his best friend Wolverine abandon him. With a friend like Cyclops, who needs enemies?

super cool Evil Morph cel, congrats!!! and good job practically stealing it at auction. there was a period where these cels from the original series were so under the radar and ignored and it was a great time to be a buyer for them at the time - i'm glad I picked up 2 cels myself several years back before X-Men 97 brought all the hype and interest back to them.

Loved Morph in the animated series and was glad to see him return, less so once it was revealed he was evil. Still a great story/character arc though, and this is a cool remnant of that. Congrats!
