DescriptionFirst, let me apologize in advance for the pain I am about to inflict on all of you. Especially if you are the current or former owner of any of these pieces. I figured since I have a near complete set of Mitch’s old mail order catalogs, it might be “fun” (if not masochistic) to take a stroll down memory lane. But take heart. For even though most (if not all) of these posts will be almost unbearable and cringe worthy to many of you, just remember that 20-30 years from now, these will be the “good old days” to some new collector just starting out.
What is very interesting to note here is that during this 9-year span of catalogs (1984-1993), there is nothing here that is priced over (or anywhere near) $1000. Actually (with the exception of the Killing Joke page), nothing even breaks the $500 range. Absolutely incredible for pieces that could all easily be five figures (or more) today! By the way, I’ve got dozens and dozens of these. So I’ll be posting them in chunks from time to time (to prolong the torture). Social/Sharing |

You've probably had literally THOUSANDS of pieces pass through your hands. Not surprising that some of it is a blur.

As the only person ( apparently) who thought this story sucked, I still would not pay the original price for it.

I don't hate the story as much as you seem to, but I am definitely in the camp that thinks it's more than a tad over rated. And don't get me started on those art prices. I still laugh whenever I see people pay over 100k for a page. While you may not have wanted to pay this old $550 price, I am just sitting here imagining all the amazing trades I could pull off with 100k in trade leverage.

Well, thats exactly what I would do if I got one of them. I did, years ago, not buy two, which were fairly cheap at the time because they did not have Batman punching the Joker or the Joker acting crazy in them. Only Joking but still a better joke than the lousy one which finishes the story. Alan Moore must have written this on the toilet as he thought of old christmas cracker jokes he had read. I always think its crazy that people pay so much for action pages and have not as much interest in 'talking' pages, despite the fact they are drawn by the same artist.

Love Bolland and love this book. But I'll be honest, I'm in that small camp of people who feel that it's just a bit over rated. For those first few years when the prices kept going up and up (and up), I just thought, hmm, interesting. But then it just didn't stop. Now that prices bottom out at 100k minimum, I always think to myself that I could probably add a half dozen or so personal grail type pieces to my collection for that kind of money. So if I had 100k to blow free and clear, would I spend it on a KJ page? I know I'm in the minority, but it's a no for me. LOL

Alan Moore feels the same so you're in good company 😉. When the clerk at my lcs told this 12 yr old he wouldn't sell me the book he sprinkled fairly dust on it 😂
