DescriptionCurrently in the collection of Alessandro Gentili.
I’ve gotten many wonderful compliments from the fine people of CAF about my collection/gallery. All giving me credit for being smart enough to buy all the pieces I bought way back when. Well, now I’m about to show you all what an absolute idiot I was. Keep in mind that many of the pieces that currently reside in my collection came from these very same catalogs. So the next time you want to call me a genius for all the pieces I did buy back then, just take a look at some of rubbish I DIDN’T buy! In other words, this is the collection I COULD‘VE had. (Somebody shoot me now! LOL) What is very interesting to note here is that during this 9-year span of catalogs (1984-1993), there is nothing here that is priced over (or anywhere near) $1000. Actually (with the exception of the Killing Joke page), nothing even breaks the $500 range. Absolutely incredible for pieces that could all easily be five figures (or more) today! By the way, I’ve got dozens and dozens of these. So I’ll be posting them in chunks from time to time (to prolong the torture). Social/Sharing |

My biggest problem back then was because pages were priced relatively inexpensive, they would sell so damn quick! Being on the West coast, by the time I received art catalogs or the Buyers Guide, the pages I was most interested in would often be sold. Solid relationships with dealers helped with that but most of us knew that. And the dealers had to apportion first dibs to multiple collector to keep us all happy. But, that time period was definitely the most fun I had collecting even though it was constant vigilance, phone calls and scrounging around for leads.

OMG! I think you must be my collecting twin (if there is such a thing). You echoed my experiences EXACTLY. I have lost count of how many times I've called Mitch only to find that I just missed out on a piece by a day or two (or even just a few hours). The first time I heard Bill and his boys talking on Comic Art Live about overnighting their CBG's, I started banging my head against the table. WHY THE HELL DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT????? And you are absolutely right, it was the most fun I ever had in my 40 years of collecting. Some frustrating lows, but a lot of incredible highs!

My fix, also being on the west coast, was to call Mitch as the comics came out to see if he would hold pages for me for when he go the art, BUT he only did it for me once because it was too much work. That was my Mike Deodato/Warren Ellis Thor DPS. Wish it would have been a Starlin or Kane cover but he didn't always get those so I didn't think to ask for one. So glad you kept those cataloges Eric. Painfull indeed.

Yeah, I must be a glutton for punishment. LOL! I used to browse through those catalogs all the time, but have not done so in a while. Just thought it would be fun to share the pain with all the other old timers.
