DescriptionFirst, let me apologize in advance for the pain I am about to inflict on all of you. Especially if you are the current or former owner of any of these pieces. I figured since I have a near complete set of Mitch’s old mail order catalogs, it might be “fun” (if not masochistic) to take a stroll down memory lane. But take heart. For even though most (if not all) of these posts will be almost unbearable and cringe worthy to many of you, just remember that 20-30 years from now, these will be the “good old days” to some new collector just starting out.
What is very interesting to note here is that during this 9-year span of catalogs (1984-1993), there is nothing here that is priced over (or anywhere near) $1000. Actually (with the exception of the Killing Joke page), nothing even breaks the $500 range. Absolutely incredible for pieces that could all easily be five figures (or more) today! By the way, I’ve got dozens and dozens of these. So I’ll be posting them in chunks from time to time (to prolong the torture). Social/Sharing |

Oh Doctor, I was in a wonderful place filled with fire and brimstone, and there was all these guys in red pajamas sticking pitchforks in my butt.

I guess I just take solice in the fact that in 1990 I was 13, and $350 was any the same as $35,000 to me at that point, just crazy amounts of money.

I only wish I had age as an excuse. I was in my thirties and just plain not smart enough to know better. Don't get me wrong, I got some great pieces from those catalogs. But not a single piece of Silver or Bronze Age artwork. Sigh!

I might actually build a time machine and go back and buy this one. Maybe just travel back and buy a heap of superman issue 1s and amazing fantasy 15s off the racks instead, then I could buy all the artwork. lol.

Ha! I was wondering when I would get the first time machine comment. I thought for sure when I started posting these that I would get bombarded with time machine comments. Personally, I wouldn't waste time with comics. I totally get where you're coming from with multiple copies of all the key issues. But I'd just focus on art. My dilema would be should I just grab all the stuff I like, or grab a few things I'm not crazy about with big time trade value? In today's market, there are pieces that you can only get by trade. So would be nice to have some serious leverage. But yeah, we could drive ourselves nuts with the whole time machine scenario. Stay safe man!

My ultimate grail is still held by the artist who created it. Ironically, it probably would fetch under 500.00 pounds if it ever surfaces on the open market. Likely, less. Someday perhaps.

I love that you post these, even if it hurts deep inside. Seeing these prices and pages makes me want to invent a time machine and go slap some sense into myself. Thank you.

And while you're there, can you do me a favor and find the 30-year old me and slap him too? In fact, slap me twice. And really, really, HARD!!!!! For all the great stuff I passed on, I deserve it. haha!
