Description

Hi gang! After torturing many of you with almost 200 continuous paper cuts in the form of old art prices, I figured this might be a good place to put a cap on it (for now). While I still have over a hundred panel pages to torture you with, I’ve decided to give you all time to let your wounds heal. LOL

It’s been quite a while since I posted any actual artwork, so let’s get back to what this site is all about. I think I have enough pieces (some new and some very old) to post weekly updates from now all the way through April (for Art Adams’ birthday celebration month). Much of the material was acquired last Spring after I retired from my job (when I still had a little bit of money left LOL). Who knows? This could end up being a last hurrah of sorts. Time will tell. Anyway, I’ll probably kick that off next week sometime after Valentine’s Day, so stay tuned.

Before we get to that however, I do want to say a few things about this silly little project. When I first got the idea to do it, I had no idea where it would lead or just how big it would get. I figured I’d pick out a dozen or so standout pieces with those crazy old prices and have a few laughs with the CAF community. But as I went through more and more catalogs, I found more and more pieces. Before I knew it, a couple of dozen pieces turned into over 50, then over a hundred, and then over 150. Yikes! The next thing I knew, I had almost 200 ads that I had to scan, re-size and crop. I spent more time in front of my computer than I did when I was still working. And let me tell you, I’m not looking forward to doing it all over again when I start posting the panel pages! LOL!

But what really surprised me was the reaction. The feedback and dialog have been wonderful. So many fun and interesting comments. It really made all the work worthwhile. So, whether you actively participated in the conversation, or just clicked in to see what was happening, thanks to everyone for playing along.

Last, but not least, HUGE thanks to my dear friend, art dealer supreme Mitch Itkowitz for all those incredible catalogs. Each time a new one arrived, it was like getting a candy store in my mailbox. The disadvantage of living on the west coast aside, there was almost no piece of mail I looked forward to getting more. My only regret was that I didn’t get on his mailing list until the third catalog, so I missed the first two. I can only imagine what treasures they held. But even without those first two catalogs, going through my run only reinforced what I already knew. In his heyday, Mitch was THE MAN. It really is incredible to see how many pieces that are now grails in someone’s collection, are featured in these catalogs. The sheer caliber of art is staggering!

While I obviously owe so much of my collection to Mitch, I don’t think it would be overstating things to say that the entire hobby owes him a debt of gratitude. I doubt I could have lasted 40 years in this hobby without the impact he made on my collecting journey. And if some of you are wondering what the best thing I ever got from him? That’s easy. His friendship.

Thanks for everything Mitch. Love ya brother!

Stay safe everyone! See you week.

thanks. It has been very special to see those catalogs and see how art is more valued but also to know how much speculation exists right now

Ha!  Well, I had one missing part on mine that I thought I found on Craigslist, but it turned out not to be a DeLorean part at all.  Thanks for the great comment DC.  Have a great 2021 and stay safe.

But where are you in the illustration? Crawling? Begging? Pleading at his feet to be put first in line for updated artwork for sale lists? Get the illustration finished.....Wait...Was it finished....Did you cut the bottom half off in embarassment?

If you look at the drawing, I am actually the one he is pointing at.  And he is saying, "I told you I am NOT mailing your catalog in advance!"  LOL

I really had so much fun following this price journey! Thank you for taking the time to do this, it gave me a lot of entertainment during some lean times. And some pain...ok, a lot of pain. But good, growth pain. :) And, if you're reading this, Mitch, Thank you, too! I've gotten art from you, as well, as I'm sure a lot of people here have. Cheers to you both

Makes me feel so good to read this.  Never thought about the timing of it, but if it helped lighten the mood for some of you during these troubling times, that's even better.  Thanks so much for ALL your comments JH.  I really do appreciate it (and I'm sure Mitch does as well).  Take care and stay safe.
