DescriptionACQUISITION DATE: 2016SOURCE: Dealer OWNER HISTORY: 1 DIMENSIONS: 12 x 16 STOCK: Bristol CREATION DATE: Unknown SIGNATURE: Yes PUBLICATION: N/A So now we come to this classic and iconic image from the cover of Silver Surfer #4, by the legendary master, John Buscema. I may never be able to choose one definitive perfect cover. And even if I could, I may never be able to effectively defend that choice in an open discussion. But for me personally, this cover is as close to perfection as I could imagine - absolutely brilliant in concept and design. Technically, creatively, artistically, and visually - for me, it’s about as good as it gets. Of course I know that Buscema created dozens of amazing covers over his long and brilliant career. And of course I know that there have been dozens of other master artists who have produced equally classic works throughout the history of this medium. But this image always seems to rise to the top for me. There’s a magical combination of sheer beauty and raw energy that I just can’t recall in any other comic cover I’ve seen. It really is the epitome of what a comic book cover should be. Which brings us to this recreation. Some of you may look at this and say, at the end of the day, it’s just a cheap knock-off. But I think it represents so much more than that. First and foremost, it’s an homage and a loving tribute by the amazingly talented Michael Maikowsky to his artistic idol. I’ve been a fan of Michael’s work for some time, and while I have some rather strong opinions about a very specific “type” of recreation, I have always enjoyed Mike’s amazing interpretations of classic Buscema works. I had actually considered commissioning a Surfer #4 piece from him, so when I saw this for sale on Kirk Dilbeck’s gallery a couple of years back, it was a no-brainer. Secondly, just as the Surfer #4 cover is as close to perfect as it gets for me, this recreation is as close as I will get to ever owning the original cover. Since the current owner is much younger than I am and has no plans to sell in HIS lifetime, I should be worm food by the time it hits the open market again, if ever. I also know what the current owner paid, and even if he offered it to me at cost (haha), it would still be more money than I have ever had, or will have, in my lifetime. So when all is said and done, I think I have a better shot at marrying a Victoria’s Secret model than I do of ever owning the original SS#4 cover. Still, even with all the talk of unattainable artwork or wealth, the fact that this piece is not drawn by Buscema himself does nothing to lessen my admiration and enjoyment of it. Mr. Maikowsky has managed to “perfectly” capture that precise and magical combination of power and beauty in the piece. And it’s that magic, that indescribable and unquantifiable quality that moves me so deeply when I look at this iconic scene. My thanks to Kirk Dilbeck for the (mostly) smooth transaction, to Mike Maikowsky for the inspired drawing, and of course to Big John Buscema for his initial creative brilliance. Social/Sharing |

I didn't know the owner of the original offered to sell you this at cost, or at all for that matter... hmmm, I wonder what he was going after to consider letting the original of this go! lol Anyhow, it's a lovely recreation of a classic indeed, and as much as I enjoy the art, as is often the case, I enjoyed your description almost as much, or more! Congrats, and thanks for sharing!

I would have thought that choosing a single favorite among the millions of covers ever published, might be a lot more difficult. But it was surprisingly easy. Which I think says a lot about the power of this image and its ability to really move the viewer.

I would be very happy with Mike's silky smooth recreation seeing the real deal is off off off the market. Like you, it would take payments for life. May finally give in one day and grab one of the Buscema SS 4 recreations. Maikowsky made a pretty one so enjoy it my friend.

I'm afraid I will have to pass on any JB SS4 recreations. While I enjoy recreations or tributes of iconic pieces by OTHER artists, I'm not as big a fan when it's done by the ORIGINAL artist. One of the things I love about orignal art is that every piece is one of a kind. Whenever an artist duplicates his or her own drawing, it takes that away. But I'm glad you enjoy this MM version. I love it, and I think I actually like it more BECAUSE it's not one of the many JB versions. Although I'm sure MM has done quite a few of these himself. LOL

Stunning recreation of one of the best Marvel covers ever! Love this image of the Silver Surfer zooming down on his silver surfbaord towards the mightiest Asgardian of them all! The poses of both the Surfer and Thor are, as you point out, perfect. Thor, bending backwards to hurl his mystic hammer at his attacker, never looked more powerful. And the Silver Surfer's pose, as he strains himself reaching forward while speeding towards the Rainbow Bridge at top speed, is breathtaking! Truly gorgeous recreation by Michael Maikowsky of John Buscema's jawdropping cover! Phenomenal pick-up, congrats!
