Description

A wonderful discovery from the Estate of Madeleine Wheeler, the executive secretary of Roy O. Disney from 1937 to 1971. Over her years of service to Mr. Disney she received many gifts for her hard work, this is just one of those treasures. The role of secretary came from the need for a prominent person to have someone whom confidential matters could be entrusted and who could act as an assistant. Madeleine had many jobs which included presenting copies of the company cables and outgoing checks that were sent to Roy's office that Wheeler deemed important. She also presented him with the morning's correspondence which he customarily answered on the same day. Her duties included reminding him of birthdays of family and friends and sending out flowers and notes for him. Roy would say: "You know Madeleine, I can never pay you what you're worth". When Roy traveled he always brought back a gift for her and though the years gave her shares of stock from his own portfolio which added up to more than 6,000 shares which she later discovered was worth more than a million dollars. - This original watercolor and ink on Strathmore measuring 15x11" remains clean and bright. This definitely looks like the hand of Tom Wood and used in the making of the 1937 Donald Duck Fan Card. Also used on a playing card in the SHUFFLED SYMPONIES (1939) card game made in England. Also used on the cover of "Walt Disney's DONALD DUCK BIRTHDAY BULLETIN", Publicity Department of RKO Radio Pictures, New York,1938.
