DescriptionStar Wars #1 Pg. 4 - 1st Han Solo & R2-D2 In New Canon! Pencils and Inks by John Cassaday. The countdown to May the 4th continues with another Star Wars art share. This is one of my favorite pages in the collection! Back in 2015, Star Wars comics had a reset. Disney had acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, and the studio was gearing up to bring Star Wars back to theaters With Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens in Dec of 2015. All prior Star Wars Comics whether through the previous license with Dark Horse Comics, or the original Marvel Comics Star Wars run in the Bronze age (as well as with all prior Star Wars spin-off novels), were deemed as "Legends" and all future comics, novels, etc. would be deemed as "canon" or "new canon" that fit into the overall story of Star Wars that the original films and sequel films would set out to tell. It was an ambitious and bold plan, that excited some fans and angered others. I won't get into all of that here though... That said, Star Wars #1 (Marvel Comics, 2015) was released on January 14, 2015 and was one of the first story telling efforts in this new era for Disney/Marvel Star Wars canon. The story for this run, written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by John Cassaday, was set after the events of "A New Hope" and prior to the events of "Empire Strikes Back". What happened to the Rebel Alliances after Luke blew up the death star, and how did the Empire (and Vader and Palpatine) react? How did the base at Hoth get set up and what events took place during that timeframe before the beginning of the Empire Strikes Back? That is what this run of Star Wars tells you and it is a run I greatly enjoyed. On this page, Han Solo and R2-D2 are introduced in the story for the first time in comics in this "new canon" era (and for the first time in general in the Disney Star Wars era, as this comic came out 12 months before Force Awakens did). I love both characters, and this was a memorable entrance to the storyline, in a major key issue in the history of Star Wars in comics. Star Wars #1 from 2015 went on to become the largest selling comic book of the last two decades, selling well over 1 million copies worldwide, and was re-printed numerous times in trade paperback and Omnibus formats as well. Infact Star Wars #1 from 2015 was the largest selling single issue comic since the early 1990s (Batman 500)!!! I enjoy having a true 1 of 1 page of art, from a story that has seen so many readers/viewers in print such as this one! Social/Sharing |

First of all, I can't believe it's almost been a decade since Disney bought LucasFilm! Secondly, you got yourself a key, killer piece of art here from this relaunch! Great stuff, Kavi, congrats!

Yeah man wow you're right its nearly a decade since the Disney purchase, time flies!!! And thank you Ruben, this was a proud pickup for me in both my art collecting and my Star Wars collecting! Cassaday does great work and it's my only example from him as well (so far).

Beautiful work by Cassaday. He took so much care to get the likenesses correct.
