Q&A with Kavi H

Q: Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why?
A: The piece in my gallery that is my favorite is the one that I have designated as my "grail". It's the 1980 Lucasfilm Star Wars Christmas Card design by Ralph McQuarrie. This was the year Empire Strikes Back came out, it must have been an especially special holiday season for those working at Lucasfilm. I'm probably a bigger fan of Star Wars than anything else in pop culture (and the comic books of it as well), so owning a McQuarrie original was a longtime goal of mine which I finally achieved. This piece was also published in the official "Art of Ralph McQuarrie" hardcover from Lucasfilm Publishing.

Q: Please tell us a little about yourself.
A: I'm Kavi H, from the east coast area (have lived in NJ, NYC, Boston) but also spent a decade living in Los Angeles. I've worked primarily in the music business professionally but have always had an insane passion for fiction and storytelling in all of it's forms from film and television, animation, books/novels/audiobooks, and of course...comics! I was originally exposed to comic books though my grandfather when I was a young child, as he gave me French/Belgian comics translated to English such as Tintin and Asterix to read all the time whenever I visited him, and I still recall those stories so fondly. It started what ultimately became a life long addiction and I don't plan on stopping reading them anytime soon, or ever at all!

Q: How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?
A: I started collecting comic art around 2017 or so, after starting to collect the books again around 2012. I started with convention sketches and sketch cover, they were my gateway drug. I did not buy a published page however until 2018, pretty late in the game compared to a lot of collectors. The first time I saw a piece of comic art was at San Diego Comic Con in 2013, but at the time I didn't have interest in actually purchasing any as I was more focused on obtaining silver age key issues and such. In hindsight, I was an idiot! haha. By the time I had moved to NYC in 2015 though and attending shows regularly such as NYCC and other local smaller events, I was always tempted to start collecting pages but it took a few years to let my guard down and actually start doing it instead of sticking to smaller sketches and illustration pieces. Once I started, I could not stop.

Q: How do you display/store your collection at home?
A: I used to have a lot of art framed and on the walls when I lived in NYC, but also had art portfolios with pages in them as well. I had certain pieces that were more permanently professionally framed and other pieces that were in more temporary interchangable frames that I would frequently swap in and out as the mood striked. I am currently in NJ though and haven't done much of a wall display yet as a bunch of my framed pieces are boxed up and in storage. I still love regularly perusing my art that I have in portfolios on almost a daily basis, as well as listening to music and my own playlists that I make for my pieces while looking at and appreciating the art.

Q: What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?
A: Wow, this is tough to answer!!! I have to go with my favorite stories and titles to some degree. I'm always looking for Star Wars artwork, more so from the vintage Marvel run stuff these days since that is a big hole in my collection, but I have quite a modern collection of Star Wars art as well. Mark Bagley pages from Ultimate Spider-Man is also something I'm always hunting for as my personal favorite run of Spider-Man which was the Spidey of "my era" so to speak. Grail level stuff I'd be after that is extremely significant to the hobby but that I probably will never own would be - David Mazzucchelli artwork from Daredevil "Born Again" or "Batman Year One" (I know that doesn't really exist though), Frank Miller artwork from Daredevil or "The Dark Knight Returns" (exists but I'll never see it in my collection), and early Kevin Eastman/Peter Laird Mirage Studios TMNT stuff, a page from issue #1 or really any early issue would be mind blowing for me! I'll leave it at that because I could go on for days on a question like this and never run out of stuff I could dream about possibly owning but more than likely I never will - and that's totally OK!
