Description”Land Beneath the Ground” is the only cover used in both of Publisher Gladstone`s two license periods : First time as the cover for ”Gladstones Comic Album Series” ; Uncle Scrooge # 6 from 1988 ( First Gladstone license period 1986 – 1990 ) - and second time as the cover for ”Uncle Scrooge Adventures # 28 in 1994 ( Second Gladstone license period 1993 – 1996 ).To me it`s the ultimate cover that combines Rosa`s well known admiration for the classic adventures by Carl Barks and at the same time adding his own special style of drawing to the Duck universe. Carl Barks never drew a cover for his story ”Land Beneath the Ground” so when Gladstone re-published the classic 1956 story by Barks, they asked Don Rosa to make a cover for the until then ”coverless” story. The ”Land Beneath the Ground” cover is as early as the 5`th Cover that Don Rosa made in his whole career as a Duck artist. But maybe most fascinating is that it`s the very first cover Rosa made directly related to an authentic Carl Barks story. Don says: "This was the first time I did a cover based on an old Barks story that I grew up with. Barks seldom did covers illustrating his stories in the 50s. Such a coverless story was his 1956 classic 'Land Beneath the Ground'... so Gladstone called on me to supply a cover for their reprint. I can imagine what a thrill drawing this scene might have been for me in 1988!" This cover was drawn years before Don Rosa began making his D.U.C.K. dedications, so you won`t find any on this cover. I purchased the cover directly from the first owner that had this cover for nearly 30 years and who bought it directly from Don Rosa himself. Only traded twice and never on the official marked, I has now proudly and with gratitude become the second owner of this magnificent cover. As the first owner explained : ..>That is AMAZING when you see it up close (a photo won't do it justice) and you see how much white-out Rosa fastidiously applied to the rocks and such to give them a textured effect that really is lost on the printed cover! Knowing what we do about Rosa, I can easily see him doing this !..< Social/Sharing |
