DescriptionPerhaps my greatest commission ever.I worked out this commission with Gerhard years ago and we came up with the idea to use a Bernie Wrightson Batman piece that I own as the central figure. Ger light boxed Bernie’s Batman and created the rest of the scene around him. He showed me the pencils for his design and I was completely blown away. Then… the unthinkable happened… After Ger started inking it he was disappointed with the way Batman was turning out and didn’t feel he had done Wrightson justice. The entire commission was abandoned midway and Ger swore it would never be completed. He also swore off superhero pieces completely. “No. More. Superheroes. Period.” This was years back and he has held true to his word since then. Fast forward to 2022… Completely out of the blue Ger contacted me and said he had decided to finish the commission after all. Boy am I ever glad he did! A true masterpiece! 19x24" *I counted the individual pen strokes on this piece and there are 3,872,456 separate strokes. Feel free to fact check me if you'd like 😜 Social/Sharing |

Hands down one of the coolest collaborations I've ever seen. Absolutely killed it with the textures here. Never mind the fact that this is a giant wall filler at 19x24 - this is one of those ones that sets the entire wall and everything around it is just a little bit less. Congrats!

Was thinking of what to write here, and then I saw the first line of your description. I think that pretty much covers it. Congratulations!

Feels like I'm looking into another world that's somehow more real than ours. Breathtaking.

Wonderful piece. Has a very 3-D look to it based on Batman being so dark and present up front. The entire piece is so detailed. Congrats!

I love how the knee protrudes in just the right proportion! The arch is such a great framing device. Gerhard pieces are an experience in itself.

Superb! So fun to see Gerhard tackle the character along with the background here. Love the use of black and radiating architectural elements to draw our eye to the hero

You can't get a better Grail piece than this one! Batman is great, but the architecture steals the show. Congrats!

I thought this was a great idea since I sold you that Wrightson sketch years ago. Glad that Ger had a change of hard and dug this out of the drawer of no return and this piece can hang proudly on your wall and bring you the joy I know it does.

A) Baller. B) 3872456 is also the stock inventory number for aftermarket general purpose valves from the Caterpillar Company. Coincidence? I think not! That's waaay to specific. I think that not only did he finish YOUR superhero, but the day of the Caterpillar is at hand in a forthcoming Gerhard limited series first hinted at here! Amazeballs.

The inking and deatils are insane. Still Wrightson and yet all Gerhard at the same time. Hard to believe it's pen and ink, looks so unreal. Huge congrats on a GREAT commission.

Man, this is unreal. It's crazy poring over here online but it must be CA-RAZY in person. SO much poreed in...no area untouched with that uber detailed care. I can imagine your eyes when opening up the package - keanu-whoa-woah-940x540.jpg (940×540) (phillymag.com). Huge congrats, man!

Absolutely stunning. Like, literally... I have no words left to me. Sincere congratulations on what has to be the most astonishing commission I've ever seen, Daryl. Thank goodness Gerhard finished this. To call it "Epic" or "Spectacular" would be to damn it with faint praise. Incredible piece, Daryl!
