Description
One of my main collecting goals for 2021 was to pickup a Todd McFarlane Hulk page, so I was very happy to get this in an auction.

I was reading the Hulk when McFarlane started on the book and his art rapidly improved with each issue. This page is from the final issue that he penciled (not counting his layouts for Erik Larsen for #346).

This is a particularly gory page as the Hulk is impaled by Rock, while the Leader watches. I guess the Comics Code Authority was okay with it since it was only green blood.

The published inker credits are Jim Sanders and Chris Ivy. I reached out to Chris who very kindly provided the following information, confirming that he inked this particular page:

Yes, this is definitely one of my pages. I remember this job like it was done yesterday because it was literally my very first published comic work. I even recognize my own hand-writing in the color note at the lower right.

For the first two-thirds or so of the issue, Jim was inking all the figures and I was inking just the backgrounds—but the deadline was so tight that, towards the end, not only were we both inking whole pages (like this one) at the same time to get done quickly, but I recall that the last two-page splash with the gamma-bubble explosion in it was only half-penciled by Todd—so I had to finish and tighten the pencils on those two pages before inking them. Good times!

Thanks again to Chris for the info.

SHLUCK! That's the onomatopoeia I'd put there. Impale him through the gut, and it only makes him madder. Gotta love the Hulk. I really like that 4th panel where he transportation begins. Capturing enough lines to give a full impression of the Hulk and his grievous wound, while stripping enough away to show he's disappearing. Cool artistry. Nice major goal score! Big congrats!
