DescriptionThe Marvel vs DC event of 1996 was a huge deal, it was a fan interactive event that had me fully engaged and enthralled! As a result of in story events, the two Universes merged to form the incredibly fun Amalgam universe with hybrid versions of our heroes & villains! One of my favorite characters to come out of this event was Spider-Boy, the combined form of Spider-Man & 90’s era Superboy. For a fun commission idea, I requested this piece from Tom & Karl, the creators of 90’s Superboy. Karl was also the writer on the Spider-Boy Amalgam comic so it especially made him the right choice to ink Tom on this one. Love seeing Spider-Boy flanked by the heroes he was inspired by. I made the specific ask for the Spider-Man on this piece to be Ben Reilly as he was the current Spider-Man during the Marvel vs DC event. Tom has a knack for drawing energetic youthful characters and I never tire of seeing him do so! Social/Sharing |

I raise by root beer float in a toast to you! It's such a cool idea and what they probably would have done for a Wizard cover.

High praise! A Root Beer float toast, I'm honored! You bring up a great point, it does indeed feel like a Wizard cover!!

I've always said that what I liked best about the Kesel/Grummett version of Superboy is that he was very much patterned after Peter Parker. Young, a teenager, very comfortable goofing off with name calling in the middle of a fight with a supervillain. But until just recently, I never knew that Spidey and Superboy had actually been amalgamated! So cool and obviously a great choice, which makes this an even greater commission!

Agreed, it's that lighthearted quippy nature that really endeared him to me! The Spider-Boy mash up was a standout to me, maybe only 2nd to the Dark Claw (Wolverine/Batman) design. Just some great fun silly comic book goodness!

Great piece Carl!!! Loved this one when you unboxed (or showed it at least I think?) in a prior video, and it's great to appreciate in the full resolution scan here.

Wow this is drop dead gorgeous, what a fun piece to have Spider-Boy hang out with his inspirations. How did you get Tom and Karl to work on this together, were they at the same con?
Spider-Boy looks so great in Tom's artstyle, if I ever get him for a commission I definitely want to ask him to draw him now, so thanks a lot for sharing!
