DescriptionBecause I was much more of a Marvel than a DC reader and because the title appeared slightly “after my time,” I never read New Gods in the 70's.When I first saw this page, however, I was struck by panel two: in addition to the early, classic, Kirby Sue Storm-type profile and rather rich Colletta inking, I liked the shadowy figure beyond the car window and the mild Kirby machinery on the underside of the steering wheel. Then I backed up to panel one: great composition, depth, and clarity of story – a windowed-woman, a car flank, and an assortment of thugs aft. Then I rolled forward to panel three: the gas cloud, a couple of hats, the nose of a gun, a hand – such a typically cool Kirby close-up or mash-up caught at the height of the drama. And finally panel four. How much fun did Kirby have with this one?! Look at the hats, including the one on the guy's face in the foreground. Look at the guns, including the one pinned against the rear bumper of the car. (Only Kirby could have imagined the gun of the Black guy ending up pinned under the body of the stripe-suited guy.) Look at the collection of fallen bodies, including the guy resting against the rear bumper and the leg of another guy thrown over it. And to my eye the best detail of all: the right leg and shoe of the guy resting against the rear of the car caught underneath the guy in the foreground. I hope at the least that creating this fourth panel gave Kirby and/or Colletta a smile if not a guffaw. Fabulous story-telling on this one by the King! Thanks, Bechara. Social/Sharing |

I was buying these new (even though a Marvelite, Kirby was always the MAN), and just loved all the weirdness, esp. in New Gods

Colletta's inking is superior here. Really fun Kirby New Gods example. Nice pick-up Mark!

To me, the first panel speaks volumes about Kirby's artisitic skills. Really pretty!

Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must cut down the mightiest tree in the forest... with... a herring!

Nonbody told a story better than Jack Kirby. What a great page from his New Gods--No super heroes, no action-packed fight scenes, just a tight, suspenseful story that sucks the reader in. Love Coletta's thick, rich inks here. A terrific Kirby page!
