DescriptionI've always been a big X-men fan. Growing up, my older brother was already collecting Uncanny so I'd redirect my comics money elsewhere and just read his copies... and I remember us having debates over Silvestri's Art when he took over. My brother was a big fan but there was something about the Art that just didn't appeal to me but I could never put my finger on why that was. I didn't think the Art was bad, but it just didn't pull me into the stories for whatever reasons. It took me starting to collect original art to finally figure it out... again because of a debate with my brother. I was showing him an Alan Davis and Mark Farmer X-men page I'd acquired and he said he had always disliked those guys because the images seemed unfinished to him; that they lacked detail. So the bold, fluid, clean style that I loved so much put him off... and that's when I realised that the excess of really fine lines everywhere was what he loved and I found difficult in Silvestri; it was just a bit too scratchy and full of tiny details for me. Still, I always thought Silvestri excelled at form, anatomy and dynamism in his poses and storytelling. His stuff is always full of energy, albeit sometimes more in the form of nervous energy in his frenetic line work. One of the top 90's stars as far as I'm concerned. I lost track of him for the longest time but was drawn in to the 2011 restart of Incredible Hulk in large part because of his striking (I want to say "passively brutal and intimidating") depiction of the character. I still prefer cleaner/bolder inks (see my very rough Photoshoped rework I added as an additional image, to show what I mean and not to insinuate my hacky job is better in any way), but man that 4th panel Hulk is just killer. Again, it just screams passive brutality. X-men pages are probably well out of reach for me now, but I'm quite satisfied with his work on these Hulk issues. Acquired via Heritage auction. As per auction description: "Hulk joins Gor and Amanda Von Doom in the hunt for Bruce Banner's base". Inks were originally attributed to Joe Weems, and his name does appear as inker for the cover and first page recap, but Heritage corrected to note Silvestri as having inked the bulk of the book himself (including this page). So, you were never really drawn to the Hulk as a character, yet here you are with two recent original art purchases, both featuring The Hulk!

Genuine coincidence! :) In fact, that only really dawned on me once they were in transit. They were really Artist more than character driven pick-ups.

Sure, sure. Next you'll be telling me that the fact that the Hulk only appears in a single panel on each page is also a "genuine coincidence"! 🤪

Still a sweet pickup. Silvestri is such an architect. Congrats!

Yes I sent the correction to Heritage that this piece was inked by Marc and not by Joe.. Joe's inks on this story were so amazing, I wish he could have inked it all but that happens sometimes! Nonetheless, very nice page, a big congrats!
