DescriptionSavage! Sensational! She-Hulk!As with countless others, the divine Ms. Walters will always be more “sensational” than “savage” to me, but what’s not to love about a David Finch spread showcasing a gamma-sized loss of control? This one is all about sheer, visceral power, and no other piece in my collection comes close to packing this much of a wallop when seen in person. It… is impressive. Danny Miki’s incredible inks imbue the piece with the patented amount of detail we have all come to expect from Mr. Finch; from the dust and smoke swirling behind them, to the monstrous size of the central figure (and her hair on the black background!), to the mud-spattered grille and treads on the tires of the truck heading Cap’s way, there is no question that David and Danny were fully invested in this project. K Gearon pointed out to me that this is a double page “version” of one of David’s favorite single-page layout structures: a large splashy image comprising the left half of the page, and a tier of panels telling “the rest of the story” on the right. What’s fun here is that the truck’s left fender, Cap’s head, and the piece of rubble to Cap’s right are all subtly popped out in front of those right-side panels, lending extra dimension and imperative to Cap’s present situation (you can almost feel the blow in panel two). This was an absolutely fantasmagorical “checking of the box” for me which required parting with a treasured piece of art so that I could leverage it into this one (the same old story… :) ). I can’t thank F M and K Gearon enough for their roles as sounding boards, sages, and shamen through the process - thank you sincerely, gentlemen. And thank you, Albert! Social/Sharing |

And here it is!!
I know what it means to you so it's fantastic to see it's (finally) in your hands :)
I've written time and time again how I believe that Bendis' tenure at Marvel defined a whole era (of success) for the house of ideas and it certainly started with Avengers Disassembled of which you got a PRIME (& savage) example here.
I also prefer my She hulk sexy and lawyery but I won't tell her on this page ;p

Thanks, F M (and for more than just the great comment :) ), and I think you're spot on about the "Bendis era". I think it was Don Thompson who said that "the Golden Age of comics is whenever you're twelve" (I've heard many say that since, but he was the one from whom I heard / read it first), but I remember feeling that 12-year old level of excitement (when I was *ahem* much older) throughout the vast majority of Brian's nearly two decades at Marvel. SO excited to add this to the collection; it's like I'm twelve again (again)! :) Thanks again, F M (and all) for the comments.

WOW! I'm really into Finch's more "atmospheric" stuff but this monster (no pun intended) really shows his prowess on some straight up superhero slugfest stuff. Excellent acquisition, Jason!

This was the storyline where I first took real note of Finch's art. I also think this storyline was the beginning of the shift away from the Ultimate universe back to the mainstream Marvel universe as the place where the important stories happened. The rumors that Marvel would replace its entire line with the Ulimate line came to a stop after this story and the subsequent relaunch of the Avengers with Spider-Man and Wolverine on the team.

Thanks, Michael, and that's a REALLY great point that I had forgotten about... I remember those rumors, and then they just sort of... stopped as things never really slowed down from this point on. Thanks again, Michael (and all), for the great comments!

That's awesome, Jason. Many of us first found Finch on Avengers, and for most it originated in this arc. Next level cartoony detail througout, and I'd be remiss not to give Miki credit too for contributing. We'd rarely seen Jennifer truly Hulk out this way - a scary sight indeed! In a great way! Big congrats, bud - I know you're stoked about this one.

Thanks, K, most sincerely. This arc was indeed the first place I remember seeing Finch's art for the first time (in that Wizard preview that reprinted the first 8 pages or so of Avengers 500) and the power of the inks can't be overstated; from solid blacks to the thin detail lines Finch is known for, whatever technique was needed to underscore this moment was brought out and thrown down of the page by Mr. Miki. As others have commented, it's a very powerful piece - a real gut punch. Thanks once more, K.

Savage indeed! The insight into Finch's process is invaluable. The sheer power of the main image in nearly overwhelming. Congratulations!

Thank you, A K! If you zoom in on the fourth panel (the one of Lionheart being thrown away), you can see all the penciled perspective lines... I always love seeing the "skeleton" the artist built underneath their images... Thanks again, A K (and everyone)!

Great Disassembled DPS! Finch and Miki classic for the storyline that would affect the Avengers team as we knew it for good. Great tie ins to the Scarlet Witch storyline that would develop after.

WHAT!? Oh man, what a superb example of the insanity that was Avengers: Disassembled! I was gripped with fear when Jen started Hulking out. I remember it being a real white-knuckle read when I brought the issue home from the LCS. Congratulations, pal, I know it must have been quite a sacrifice to land this modern treasure!

Thanks so much, Doc! Your awesome collection of New Avengers artwork (and your goal of getting a piece by each artist to work on the title) has always been an inspiration; thank you. And you're exactly right about how scary She-Hulk comes across in this scene (which is, of course, exactly the intent, and a credit tot he creative team); after being so used to the safety of the sexy, saucy, and in-control "Shulkie", it was extremely effective to remind us in this manner what could go wrong... (her eyes and hair in that first splash panel are so scary... it's really beautiful, detailed work...). Thanks again, Doctor (and everyone)!

I clearly remember all the hype about this storyline when it came out, but I never did get around to reading it. Either way, you picked up an incredible dps featuring a crazed looking She-Hulk I never want to see again! I particularly love that Finch, at least in the splash panel, drew her wwith 95% of her breast tissue missing, typical of female body builders or any other woman who gets to this level of size and shredded physique!
As for Fred and Kahlil, you couldn't have two wiser sages in your corner and I should know, as I have always prided myself in the fact that I live and learn from fools and from sages. You know it's true!

Thank you, Ruben! If you're interested in reading the story, I'd be happy to loan you my trade... Yes - you're exactly right about the body type they gave She Hulk here in this moment; another effective "about face" from the curvy Jennifer Walters we had predominantly seen (and had become used to) up to this point, which (when coupled with the mammoth vehicle she's holding) really... drove home the point.
And yeah, folks may think there's a better place than CAF to go for sages and wizards of original art, but to them I would say Dream On. Thanks once more (as always), Ruben, for your great comment .

Something savage this way comes. How Finch is able to imbue so much horrific nuance into the fantastic (i.e., that which he's never seen with his own eyes) is beyond me. These panels are scarier than most PCH. Jason, you're killing it, keep it going...!

Thank you, Steve! It's crazy - whenever I look at that main splash (which has been pretty often lately :) ) I actually HEAR in my head the pained groan of the truck she's holding... I don't know how Mr. Finch did it here, but surely it's cheating to be able to bring two of our senses to bear on an image to convey the peril...? I don't know, man, but it is pretty darn scary cool. Thanks, always, Steve!

Beautifully composed and great detail by an artist that really knows how to express the story through his art and characters. Awesome piece, congrats!

This is what SAVAGE SHE HULK is all about - pure unhinged anger on display. Amzingly illustrated by David Finch - this packs a PUNCH! Congrats and thanks for sharing!

You know, if I was attacking someone with "Hulk" in their name, I'd do more than slap them in the butt with a sword. :) Fierce, savage, beautiful, and awesome, are the adjectives I'd use here. Jennifer might be too lawyerly a lot of the time to totally lose her stuff, but it is in the blood, and it's really cool to see here in all its double-sized violent glory. I'm guessing she gets more savage and muscly as she gets angry, too. And I hope Cap has some Advil in his tights. Congrats on the awesome art, and for landing something so sought after!

Sorry but She Hulk for me will always be Byrne's version. BUT, I will admit that this DPS looks simply spectacular. Kudos to the inker as well!

She-Hulk in the comics is usually kept in check by the writers vs. what she really is, a DAMN HULK! Hulk is all about anger and power. Love to see it demonstrated here!

Yowza! Now that's something I've never seen before--A She-Hulk as savage and out-out-control as the regular Hulk himself! It's a welcome change from the buxom version of Jennifer Walters. And Finch's portrayal is about as scary as I've ever seen any Hulk. Miki's beautiful inks are about the only thing beautiful on this DPS! Congrats!

That's really the perfect way of putting it, Bill - "Miki's beautiful inks are about the only thing beautiful on the DPS!" The savagery, horror, and loss-of-control in this moment is realized absolutely perfectly here; it's pretty darn terrifying. The piece is a thing of beauty, without question, but it sure ain't beautiful! Thanks, Bill (and all!) for your great comments.
