Description

I got this Flash Gordon sketch from Steve at a Chicago ComiCon convention in 1988.

Steve was charging x-amount for a pencil sketch, and x + x for an inked sketch.

I offered to pay him his inked price if he would be willing to put some more detail in the pencil sketch that he would have done otherwise. In those days, Steve insisted that people who got sketches from him stand and wait while he worked on their drawings. He said, "Are you sure you don't want a marker-inked sketch of Flash Gordon?" I told him I was sure and he went ahead and finished the drawing.

I saw Steve again at another convention a year or more later and reminded him of the sketch. He said, "Oh yeah, I remember that one... it looked like this, right?" and he proceeded to draw the same layout on a table napkin. I told him he got it right. He said, "Yeah, your insistence for more detail in a pencil sketch made me work on it enough that it stuck in my memory."

A perfect marriage of character and artist. I can't believe I've never seen Steve draw Flash Gordon outside of this. It seems like a no brainer!
