Description

This pencil preliminary was done prior to the painting of a wonderful piece of art that was the first original piece of fantasy or comic-related artwork I ever saw around 1971. A fellow I know had bought the painting from Jeff Jones at the World Science Fiction Convention in Boston that year. I have made many attempts to buy the painting over the years, but it has never been for sale. When I saw that Dan, the ComicCellar, had this prelim to the coveted painting for sale, I knew that I had to have it. I bought it in Dan's eBay auction in June 2009. The finished painting was the cover to STYX #2 a photo-offset fanzine published in 1973, and later appeared in the book, THE ART OF JEFFREY JONES, page 85. Both publications omit the lower part of the painting with Jeffrey's lettering of the name of the character and painting.

The dimensions are 8.5" x 12.5" image area on 11" x 16.5" vellum.
