DescriptionWell, I don't know much about this one. A big oi' illustration by Hal Forrest, best known for his work on Tailspin Tommy. I acquired this art back in the 90's from someone who didn't know the origins. You might not be able to tell because the pencils are faint, but the top of the art has a big "FLAMING YOUTH: 1929 edition." Was this a planned sequel for the controversial (and now largely lost) Flaming Youth movie from 1923? A re-re-release? There IS a 1929 movie short called Flaming Youth, but this doesn't seem to be connected, because that short is just "Little Billy" Rhodes doing his vaudeville act. I can't even be sure this piece was ever printed anywhere. Still, I love it. It's a big 60 x 50 cm, and--another thing hard to tell in the image--is that the lacing on the woman's lingerie is all basically three-dimensional, executed with THICK globs of paint that really bring some life to her underthings. Fun!I'm putting in some additional images. A detail, and then some images of the 1923 Flaming Youth movie, which I feel is connected to this piece. It starred Colleen Moore, one of the first flappers! Social/Sharing |

I know very well Tailspin from Forrest.. but this is unusual and so pretty, sensitive and poetic, he show here his quality also as great illustrator. I think this is very rare and particular. Really congrats.

Thanks! I feel quite pleased to have this in my collection, for the reasons you say!
