DescriptionUPDATE: Signed by Jaime in Ann Arbor, Michigan in October 2023 (see additional image)This stunning 11x14 Jaime Hernandez Love and Rockets illustration from 1989 depicting Penny Century, her horned billionaire husband H.R. Costigan, and their daughter Clarita pushes so many of my buttons. Full page, luscious inks, and one of my favorite Locas characters from a series that has influenced scores of comics creators over the past 40 years. Jaime's sequential storytelling skills set the foundation for the stories he tells about his Locas characters but his splashes and full-page illustrations are pretty rare and special, outside of the covers that have hit the market. However, even though this is a full page illustration and a damn fine piece of good girl art, Jaime also tells a story through the positioning and posing of Penny relative to the rest of her family. Published in: - The Complete Love and Rockets, Vol. 15: Satyricon - Fantagraphics 1990 Love and Rockets calendar - Fantagraphics Love and Rockets postcard set UPDATE: I discuss this piece and other Jaime Hernandez pages from my collection on an episode of the Felix Comic Art show: Social/Sharing |

Luscious inking throughout. Very wet with how Penny looks. This calendar piece is something you wouldn't mind staring at for months ahead.

Thanks, Marcus. You always know how to get directly to the essence of a piece.

A really beautiful piece. I always thought Jaime Hernandez artwork looked like Alex Toth meets Archie Comics but perhaps thats superficial. I know there are many more elements at work in his style. It must have been gutting for him to have one of his heroes (Robert Crumb) put his artwork down as 'too cute' though.
And Crumb was right about that as well. His artwork does look 'cute.' But I like it anyway and maybe that's precisely why his work appeals to so many people anyway? I still think he's a gorgeous cartoonist regardless.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment, Deene. I remember Crumb's critique of Jaime's art and, like you, it doesn't deter me loving his art--or Crumb's, for that matter.
