Description

After Frazetta, Wrightson has been my highest comic art guru from the late '70s when I first discovered his art. I remember the day I spied the classic book "The Studio" on the newsstand and felt my brain explode as I flipped through it. I spent more of my scarce cash on his books than pretty much anyone else back then, yet I've never owned an original piece of his --- until now.

Clarice, a fantastic 5 page horror yarn written by Bruce Jones that originally appeared in Creepy 77 back in 1976, is one of my absolute favorite Wrightson stories, so I was delighted when I saw this panel come up for sale recently. Each page had 4 panels, and out of the 20 images in the story, this is among the 2 or 3 most memorable for me, so I grabbed it.

I just love Wrightson's brand of romantic, classic, poignant horror. The woman in this story is as haunting and beautiful as any he ever drew, IMHO. The pen & brushwork in this piece is wonderful, and I really like his use of ink wash and white paint for snow, shadow, and atmospherics. It's a real plus for me that he created this story during his days in the famed NYC Studio with Jones, Windsor-Smith, and Kaluta creating other masterpieces nearby.

I had some great interactions with the artist at the SD Comicon back in the 90s, and was of course very sad to hear of his passing a couple years ago. He left so many phenomenal pieces for us to enjoy.

Many thanks to Kaz for parting with this piece and for the extremely pleasant transaction!

Thanks for taking a look!

Yes, good plan!  The whole story is gorgeous, but I'm especially fond of this and the subsequent panel, and I'd love to see this whole page reunited, tho it made it affordable to me that the artist broke up the pages lo those many years ago.  There's an interesting discussion on that in some other CAF galleries w Clarice panels.

Congrats on this amazing addition to your Gallery! "The Studio" is one of the best art books I've ever owned and it takes pride of place in my bookshelf. Now you only need something by BWS ;)

Amazing panel. And yes, this along with the following panel together would be hauntingly great. Art quest!

The choice to put the snow in her eyes and mouth is why he is a horror master, rather than just really good. Shutting those windows to "humanity" really makes this corpse all the more gruesome, without one drop of blood or gore. And that frozen rictus pose...definitely a haunting Wrightson image. Love it! Huge congrats!

Fantastic! Glad to see this piece to go a great collection, and a true appreciator of the body of work. Bernie Wrightson was a gem, not just because of his vast talent and influence on the medium, but also a great human being. This panel is hauntingly beautiful! Congrats!

I agree that having the page broken up makes it more affordable, given where Wrightson pages are priced at this point, but the additional benefit to having individual panels is that it really does make you realize just how great an artist he was. I think seeing pieces that are individual panels by Frazetta or Wrightson really does illustrate (pardon the pun) just what astonishing talents they were. It's the mark of a truly great artist that you can have a single panel stand on its own the way these pieces do. Congrats on this great pickup. It's a stunning, haunting piece, and the rhyming text is a perfect touch too!

Stunning panel from a stunning story by the master Bernie Wrightson! Wrightson was so incredibly talented that every single panel is like a master class in illustration. Love the brushwork here and the pathos of the scene. Hope you're lucky enough to locate and acquire the rest of the page!
