Description“Do you know what my people call this past year? The Long Halloween.”Set shortly after the events of Batman: Year One, The Long Halloween explores the early years of Batman’s crime fighting career. Gotham is suffocating in the hands of the mob…"files filled with unsolved hijackings, robberies, and murders”… causing Batman, Commissioner Gordon and Harvey Dent to make a pact to bring “The Roman” to justice. In their quest to bring down Carmine Falcone and loosen the mob’s stranglehold, the trio is forced to investigate the serial killer, known as “Holiday”, who’s been targeting the mob in a series of killings coinciding with holidays. As much as this story is a murder mystery, its also shows the transition from a city held in the grips of the mob, to one that is torn apart by the “lunatics” or “freaks” that frequent Arkham’s cells. The “organized” crime of Gotham was predictable and seemingly kept the city together. As the story progresses, we see the power of the “freaks” slowly eclipse the mob. Carmine Falcone desperately attempts to regain control and restore power back to the family in the wake of the “Holiday” killings, even hiring some of the “freaks” to sway the momentum in his favor. The mob unknowingly makes the super villains even stronger. “Everyone was against this idea. We have a sort of… policy of not working with your kind” “Your behavior, Carmine! I’m questioning your behavior! You hired that Poison Ivy. The Riddler. The Scarecrow. The Mad Hatter. Freaks!” “You thought that Gotham City was synonymous with organized crime. But, Gotham City has changed”. Harvey Dent’s transformation into Two-Face, and subsequent murder of Carmine Falcone not only signified the end of the mob, but also the beginning of unorganized crime in Gotham as we know it. Batman himself acknowledges this in his last monologue, adding “I made a promise to my parents that I would rid the city of the evil that took their lives. No matter what that evil looks like or becomes”. The Long Halloween is one of the best Batman stories ever told. Jeph crafts a compelling story and Tim, in his own brilliance, is able to match his style of art with the spectrum of themes represented in the story. This harmonious pairing means that every detail…from the dialogue, to the shadows in each panel, all the way to the punctuation is intentional and perfectly placed. The reader is fully submerged in the gritty Gotham underworld they’ve created. This page in particular highlights Tim’s strengths. The panels and transitions flow in a way that’s almost cinematic. The first panel is Batman strong-arming (literally) Sal Maroni for clues and information regarding “Holiday”. In the next panels, we get a close up of Batman’s face as he digests what Maroni is telling him. Maybe Batman is responsible for the increase in “Freak” activity. It seems that only after his debut that the “lunatics” appeared in Gotham. Maybe he inspired them. The last panel draws your eyes to the single word stat and a bird’s eye view of what took place in that back alley. Sal Maroni, and to a degree, the mob, look so small and weak in that last panel. The brilliance of this page is that we get the general gist of what’s happening, even without the words. I think my favorite part of the page is the snow. I’ve been trying to grab a page with snow on it from either The Long Halloween, or Spider-Man Blue for a long time. I remember reading that Tim inked the flakes first, and then inked around them. Sonu, as always you have meticulous taste in art. But your write-ups are just as much of a highlight for me to read. Congrats on adding another Tim Sale gem to your collection.

The staging is perfect as Batman is camouflaged in with the snowfall that drains all color leaving just black and white.

This page is incredible. Congratulations! From the snow elements, to Batman, to that camera angle in the bottom panel to the scene itself.
