DescriptionOriginal "Leather Cap" painting Pinup by illustrator Patrick Nagel.Acrylic on board. 8.25" x 12". Framed to 20.75" x 25" Model is Playmate Heidi Sorenson Created for Playboy Magazine the month before he died in January. It was in his studio at the time of his death in February 1984 and I do not believe was ever published by them as it never was mailed. The last Playboy but never made it. Nagel had been releasing many of Heidi images from this same shoot. I have a copy of the reference photo he personally shot. Stamped Dumas 1984 on recto. (Dumas is Nagel's widow). Because Playboy didn't officially get it, luckily this one was not caught up in the Playboy lawsuit with the estate over ownership and rights. This image was the Invitation for and one of only 3 images chosen to become limited edition giclees in a series released with estate stamps for the iconic 2007 Nagel Retrospective show at Just Looking Gallery in San Luis Obispo which started Nagel's return in favor. The limited editions are no longer made available. Used as the image in all the adds for the running show for LA Weekly, LA Times and so on. Published most recently in beautiful hardback for the Patrick Nagel: A Reflection of the '80s book released August 2022 by Samuel Vanhoegaerden Gallery. p. 253 This piece is SO ME!! Everything about it. The Leather Cap was such an iconic part of fashion during these times and conjures up so much nostalgia for me and represents so many things I actually can't say here. LOL. The background compliments the figure so well with the corresponding lean of the line and dots suggesting her features. I've had run ins with ladies wearing black leather caps before...

A real pop art feel to this one. Love the line work, especially on the face, but the pose and attitude add that much extra punch to a great piece!

thank you so much for posting these nagel images. amazing artwork that really sends me back to the first time i saw his efforts. a much younger me had a wall calendar that collected some of his work. mesmerizing stuff. beautiful artwork. so clean and well put together. that was way before i could check out the work for playboy. thanks for including the models credit. i remember heidis work in fright night and spies way before i was aware or allowed to see her playboy appearance.
