Description

Juanjo Guarnido's entry for the Sketchtravel project included a Totoro among many international character icons. So I put in a request for a Hayao Miyazaki character with Juanjo's art agent Jason of Essential Sequential. It's always fun to see which character the artist will choose. While I was working at my brother's booth, Jason brought the finished drawing to me. Juanjo had chosen Marco, the titlular character of Porco Rosso. It seemed so obvious. Besides the anthropomorphic link, I think the character and personality of Juanjo's detective John Blacksad is similar to Miyazaki's fighter pilot Marco. When I try to describe Marco to those unfamiliar with the film, I suggest Humphrey Bogart as Rick in Casablanca. At the point when the film begins, Marco is world weary and working as a fighter pilot chasing air pirates on the Italian coast. Over the course of the film, his idealism is found again. The comparison between Blacksad and Marco was reinforced when I saw Juanjo had done a drawing of Blacksad posing with the Maltese Falcon from the other great Bogart movie. It appears in Jason's publication: Premiere.
