DescriptionI was a teenager when Mark Waid and Ron Garney had their first run on Captain America. Cap is my favorite superhero and Waid and Garney hit the ground running with their take on the character. However, in 1996, Marvel decided to outsource the production of several of its comics to Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld. Liefeld took over Captain America, with assistance from Jeph Loeb. In 1998, Waid and Garney returned to Cap with a newly renumbered Captain America.I remember buying this issue in my senior year of high school. I was excited to see Garney return to the book. Ron had not lost a step. The first issue has Steve Rogers dropped off in Japan, with no memory of his time in the Heroes Reborn Universe, fighting a foe he had never clashed with before -- Lady Deathstrike. When this piece came up for auction, I knew I had to have it. It features all the things that are hallmarks of Ron's drawing style -- dynamic figures, clear action, and a sense of movement. Bob Wiacek inked Ron's pencils here and did his typical outstanding job. The art has an approximate image area of 20" X 16". I wish I could go back in time and tell my teenage self that I would one day own a double page spread featuring my favorite hero and drawn by one of my favorite artists. Social/Sharing |

These awesome battle images work so well and deserve the DPS treatment! Claws striking against the shield is reminiscent of another famously celebrated fight. This was a slam bang way to re-introduce Captain America!

Thank you, Marcus! The claws striking the shield do recall the famous Captain America Annual #8 cover by Mike Zeck and John Beatty.

This is a prime example of why I love DPS pages. You have a MASSIVE detailed main image, plus you get to add action panels that are easy to follow and add to the overall art. That and they look amazing framed!
Nice pick-up!

Thanks, James! The 15 double page splashes in your gallery are quite remarkable.

Oh, sweet mixture of nostalgia and cool art. Cap taking on one of Wolvie's main foes, Lady Deathstike. Oh, yeah! Her name was the coolest, and she looked great in fight scenes. Like something out of a superheroes nightmare. Congrats!

I remember, as a teenager, being surprised and delighted when I picked up this issue. Cap fighting someone who wasn't the Red Skull or Baron Zemo? Sign me up!

Thank you very much, Rick; that is very kind of you. I didn't know you were bidding on the piece! Congratulations on the success of your Captain America Facebook group. It is a great place to hang out.

This is INCREDIBLE!
Garney bringing his A-Game here in both composition and action! I've never read this issue before but now I NEED to read it!
I love how Cap is dodging and weaving away from someone that gives Logan a real workout!!!

Thank you, my friend! The issue is great and I highly recommend a read. It's a thoughtful mediation on identity and the nature of fame by Mark Waid.
Under Garney's pencils, Cap is a nearly balletic figure in motion.

BEAUTIFUL spread, A K! Mr. Garney is certainly an unsung hero of the craft; his work is so clean, and his sense of storytelling so solid... His work here makes me think of Romita, Jr. or Erik Larsen, and you can see the influence he may have had on the artists that followed him, too (like Bruce Timm or Mike Oeming, with their beautifully expressive, yet economical line). A lovely, action-packed spread (just like Marcus wrote, my first thought was of a different set of Adamantium claws on the shield), and the fact that it was a favorite story of yours when you were younger is the cherry on the cake that inspires us all in this awesome, crazy hobby, amirite? :) Congrats on the stellar pickup, A!

Thank you, Jason! You are absolutely right about Ron Garney; he is an unsung hero of the medium. And as you so aptly noted, the fact that this story meant a great deal to my teenage self is the cherry on the proverbial cake. Thanks, as always, for your kind and thoughtful comments.

Waid and Garney had the perfect Cap run. Marvel chose the worng time to break up the team.

I agree, Ken! The second Waid/Garney run had its high points but the momentum was lost when Marvel interrupted their run for Heroes Reborn.
