DescriptionThis is page 2 from the third issue of Neal Adams' historic 5 issue run on 'Avengers Vol !", and the 7th installment of the 9 issue "Kree/Skrull War" story arc. This page is of special sentimental value to me because it is one of the pages that inspired me to become a comic book artist when I first saw it as a 14 year old in 1973. I was "impressed" (too droll a word, what I really mean is, "religiously inspired" or "spiritually/aesthetically gob-smacked) not only by the art itself ("They're telling a whole story without words... you can DO that?") but by the droll terseness of Roy Thomas' 3 narrative captions.Social/Sharing |

Neal Adams sure knew how to destroy the mundane with an incredible flourish of action! This is a magnificent 12 panel fast paced sequence from a historic storyline. The way Triton is drawn within such small panels still communicates to us that he is prey desperately trying to escape the xenophobic mob.

What a page! Neal Adams really outdid himself on that one, demonstrating his storytelling virtuosity with a very classic grid! Shivers guaranteed!

Great page and glad you can pick-up, touch and see your "inspiration".
Congrats!

If memory serves, I bought it from a dealer at San Diego Comic Con (before it went "International") in 1989. I vaguely recall paying $90 for it, but I didn't make a record of it at the time.

I will triple that ninety....possibly quadruple that figure. Imagine that? Four times what you paid. Swimming in cash profit. Now that you have your career you no longer need this to inspire anyway, so allow it to inspire someone else. Bet you anything, virtual or otherwise, that you do not take up this generous offer.

Peter,
I still need all the inspiration I can get. But thank you for the offer.

This is clearly not an etching! Lol. Are you just another artist trying to tempt others to your private rooms by offering to show them your etchings?

That was sort of a joke. When I was setting up my gallery today, I needed a name. That's what occurred to me in the moment. Generally, that's the idea. If I show people my cool artwork on this site, maybe they'll let me into their virtual pants. Metaphorically speaking.

What an incredible run that was! And what a cool page to have from it. I remember thinking, "Wow, I didn't know Triton was that strong."

One of my favorite issues of all time! Between Thomas' writing and Adams' art this sequence added to the drama - almost palpable dread - why was Triton so desparate and what was the Inhumans connection to the Kree and Skrulls? It was what a universe-spanning crossover always should have been. Today, our heroes are all too familar with each other, almost any story could be written with any combination of characters.

If I were to pick a single comic page to serve as an exemplar of the descriptive "cinematic", it might be this page.
