DescriptionVanilla and the Villains (yes, I’m serious), was drawn by the great Darrell McClure (1903-1987) from September 10, 1928 and into 1929. The strip was a tongue-in-cheek melodrama, on the order of Hairbreadth Harry, and featured the southern belle Vanilla, who was often the object of desire by the top-hatted, villainous “Master Mind”. As an aside, don’t villains realize that if they wear a top hat, they’ll likely stand out in the crowd? But I digress… Luckily for us, Vanilla and the Villains did not last long, which allowed McClure to strike gold with Little Annie Rooney beginning in 1930. I’ve never, ever seen an original Vanilla and the Villains strip. In fact, this specialty drawing, circa 1928, is the only artifact from the strip that I’ve ever run across. Measuring 3¼”x 5¼”, this specialty drawing was sent out to a fan by McClure, and features a great portrait of the dastardly Master Mind, complete with his inconspicuous top hat 😊 Rare, rare stuff in any form. $65.00 + 4.00 shipping.
