DescriptionErnest H. Shepard (1879-1976) is most well-known, of course, for his illustrations of the Winnie the Pooh books written by A.A. Milne. But Shepard was more than Pooh's illustrator, working for Punch magazine starting during WWI and becoming a regular contributor beginning in 1921. Shepard eventually became Punch's lead cartoonist in 1945, a post he held for eight years. In addition to the Pooh books, Shepard is fondly remembered for his beautiful illustrations done for Kenneth Grahame's 1931 book, The Wind in the Willows. Grahame was quite particular as to who would illustrate his characters and was smitten with Shepard's sketches done when Shepard visited the older Grahame. Shepard illustrated many books during his illustrious career, and while interior illustrations from later books occasionally hit the market, I have never before seen one of Shepard’s original book covers for sale. I am pleased to be able to offer the original pen & ink cover illustration for Laurence Housman's 1934 book, Victoria Regina, which consists of 30 short plays about Queen Victoria. The queen is pictured up top, to the right of Prince Albert, with Britannia above them. At the lower right are four former Prime Ministers: Benjamin Disraeli, Henry John Temple, Robert Peel, and William Gladstone. To the lower left are female personifications of India and Africa, as well a lion, a symbol of Great Britain. From the picture of the published book, you’ll see that the subtitle was changed in Shepard's hand, but everything else remains the same. Shepard's address at the time of creation is on the back, as is a later address, once he and his family moved post-WWII. The details in the cover illustration are quite wonderful, from the beautifully stylized hand-drawn text to the caricatures and portraits of the British notables. The piece is signed three times, once on the front at the bottom, and twice on the back. If you want to acquire an original comic book cover, they are not difficult to find. But a book cover illustration by Ernest Shepard? Good luck! The piece measures a tick over 15”x 10½” and is drawn on heavy Whatman’s illustration board. You can see some light sunning from when the piece was matted and framed previously, but it’s a light cream color. This is a piece that deserves to be matted and framed and admired on a wall for years. $1250.00 + 30.00 Registered Mail/Insured shipping. Fee-free Paypal, Venmo, wire transfer, check or money order on this one. Social/Sharing |
